Having nightmares here having just googled fractured tooth on google
My lad fractured his tooth a few years ago to cut avery long story short I didnt have it removed one vet said he should have it out others said leave it and see how he goes on. Due to this he has to have his teeth done every six months which isnt an issue because he's very good and doesnt need sedating.
Anyway, last year he had an orange discharge coming from his nostril which ende dup smelling like rotten flesh it was awful!! got the vet out who administered antibiotics and said the EDT should come out ASAP and sort his teeth out which she did, everything was fine and then yesterday he started again with this orangy discharge again, he had his teeth last done the second week of December so not that long ago.
This EDT said things have changed recently about having their teeth out, 6 years ago I was quoted between 2 - 6K for the tooth out!! They would have to have him in Leahurst and knock a hole in his jaw and get it out that way, which I baulked at becuase they said it could end up causing untold misery for him and infection. She now says becuase he is much older (nearly 16) that it would be easier to get out, its a back molar either 2nd or 3rd from the back. Having read some things on the internet I am now feeling quite sick to think what he will have to go though and want to know if anyone else has gone through this.
One person even said that her horse is close to death due to sinus problems caused by a tooth!!!

Stars was made worse as he was coming up to 8 so the tooth had a massive root on it.

I do overreact sometimes when I see things on the internet but having had problems with this tooth before I have a feeling it will have to be whipped out!!
If it was a simple thing like sedation and pull the thing out at home i would go ahead with it tomorrow but I have this uneasy feeling it wont be!!
He has a retained baby tooth underneath it, sonmething we found out when he was younger and my then vet at the time said for it to stay in becuase it wouldnt cause any problems!! Little did I know till I had him xrayed a few years ago that this is now a HUGE problem grrrrr and it woulnd tbe so easy.
ANyway, am getting the vet out and see what they h ave to say, my EDT is very good and she says she will remove it but its wether my vets will allow her to really becuase they have their own EDT who I dont like and I dont want him touching my horse (long story).

We had a Dartie called Wotnot(!) who kept abscessing due to a molar tooth - the abscess always burst externally and he used to have pus running down his cheek  . He had his tooth removed but, because it was so tight, he had to have it punched out externally through the jaw bone. He healed really well and had no further problems although he did have a little star-shaped scar but whether that was from the operation to punch the tooth out or from the repeated abscesses it is hard to say.

we have teeth out all the time as we care for the elderly horse, it normally isn't a problem if you have a good dentist, but it sounds like to me me you have a sinus problem, is it out of one nostril or both? the smell is normally much worse if its sinus rather than rotten tooth, I developed a good nose for it over the years!

I had to have a molar taken out of my 21 year old mare. She was having a problem with grass balling up in one side of her gum and I was having to put my hand in daily to pull it all out, got my finger crunched more than once. There appeared to be a gap between the molars so I got the vet out.She was sedated with a local anaesthetic and the tooth was removed, it did take quite a while to get it out, it had fractured,leaving the gap between the molars, so that was the reason for the grass balling up in her mouth. She was fine afterwards and the vet put her on antibiotics.It didn't cost a huge amount, a set fee for tooth removal, plus the anaesthetics, antibiotics and he also rasped her teeth while under sedation before he removed offending tooth... Just found the bill £118 |

Ditto what the others are saying, mine had one out with no sedating (he was too old) I had a sleepless night beforehand, but he just stood there, not sure he even noticed tbh. It was done at the yard on a routine call out so no extra special charges.
Sometimes what we think will be the most difficult treatments turn out to be the easiest. My mare had to have a bit of her tongue cut off (she had nearly bitten it through and it had healed in a lumpy way). I was holding her and got myself positioned in case of fireworks - said to the vet "OK ready" just as he said "OK all done"

I've had some oldies have wobbly ones whipped out no problem - just in the stable and I think we gave them some pain relief and flushed the mouth for a few days. I kept the teeth as well  |

Our old stallion Rameed has had 3 molars out in the last year from his upper left. The first one had been fractured some years ago and came out with no sedation standing in yard with a lead rope around his neck to stop him walking off. Once the first one is removed the others will slowly loosen as there is nothing holding them tight, so the next 2 came out before the winter using the same method. He is eating haylage and soaked coarse mix with no problem and not losing condition. He is 22 this year and I think extraction does come easier as they get older as the teeth stop erupting at some point. |
