Posted - 20 Feb 2011 : 1:57:29 PM Toffee has been diagnosed with Cushings & IR.
She has been prescribed Metformin [22 tablets a day]. After 4 weeks her Insulin levels were back to normal so the Metformin has been dropped by half. She'll have bloods taken 4 weeks after the last test to see if her Insulin levels are still normal.
Obviously she remains on Precend for the Cushings, currently on 2 tablets a day. |

Posted - 19 Feb 2011 : 10:45:26 PM We had a horse diagnosed with acute diabetes - EMS. We were given Metformin - she was on 36 x 850mg tablets per day plus danilon and acp to start with - once we had her diet and feed regime under control and the blood tests showed her levels back within the normal range the metformin was stopped. She was on the Metformin for approx 4/5 months but it saved her life.
Our mare has lost a huge amount of weight - we found Simple Systems Metaslim, Pura beet and non molassed chaff keeps her in super order. Plus two hay nets per day.
Its a long uphil struggle but with care and attention there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck |
