Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 09:58:35 AM Do you wait before going back on to a 'normal' diet? Zoukie had a mild spasmodic colic yesterday, and as per vet's instructions only gave him hay and a couple of handfuls of beet yesterday. Was going to do the same again today but wondered how long other folks wait before re-introducing concentrates?

Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 6:47:44 PM Thanks for all the help! He's had beet pulp and chop tonight, though I could tell by the way he rooted through it he was looking for 'the hard stuff' and seemed quite p-o'd when he realised that was all he was getting! We normally only do one feed a day, but will get Jo to give him a small feed with a handful of nuts in the morning when she goes to 'do' them, as well as another small one in the evening.
He seemed fine today and was quite happy to chat up mares (including his mum!) so fingers crossed it was just a one-off.

Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 4:06:55 PM When my lad has is little tummy aches I tend to leave him a couple of days till I put him back to normal.
Usually I feed him high fibre cubes soaked for a couple of hours so they go mushy with a handful of bran till he's back to normal, and good grass (I know theres nothing much about at this time of year) is great for making them poo!!

Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 3:46:44 PM trickle it back in to normal levels over a few days and monitor how keenly he eats - is he back to normal attitude about his grub. It's hard not to be entirely paranoid, hope he's better now! |

Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 12:52:38 PM When our older mare got mild colic last month the vet advised us to turn her out the next day and to feed her normal diet (alpha a, soaked sugar beet and horse & pony cubes)plus bran, but make sure it was really wet and , and in smaller quantities (i.e. split the feeds and feed four times instead of two). I used hot water so it was more of a bran mash. She coped fine with this and hasn't looked back. (fingers crossed). |

Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 10:45:50 AM If you usually give him cubes I would give them to him but soak them in warm water so they are easier to eat and digest. If you use mis gradually add some to the soaked sugar beet over a couple of days.
