Thinking of getting a companion pony for Lady V.... smaller the better... also i dont want to have a companion pony who will also need a companion if left alone. and so on.. or i could end up with 50 companions lol!! thinking maybe going to the sales? but not sure? any advice? how do you stop them from being annoyingly unseperable?

Hi, if anyone has a 12.2hh (ish) first ridden (ish) for summer loan, there is a supper little girl just so deserving of a pony. Must be a Mare. She can ride walk and trot.

If anyone can help would be much appreciated.

Delyth Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 07:28:13 AM
She'd be fine on a livery yard. She's a wise old bird. She likes to look after the youngsters best and at the moment is with my old Edykt daughter who is forever bickering !! Her diet is just soaked grass nuts and her supplement which seems to last her forever so cheap to feed !!
nissibay Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 10:59:31 PM
Yes thats right Lynda, although they have said it would be £25 per month so its fine... but thats a good point to let Delyth know incase she has any probs her being on a livery yard?? they will be moved into seperate paddock just the two of them with horses on each side of the fences?? i also think i prefer to loan and as you said your friend wants a forever and ever home.... least loaning gives me options and the owner of course... thanks any way though lynda
LYNDILOU Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 10:38:47 PM
sounds like delyths would suit you better .
yes I think I got the letters mixed up he is not a D
also I know my friend wants the home to be a permenant one.
I remember you are on livery Sheena that will be an extra livery to pay for wont it?
nissibay Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 8:43:45 PM
ohhhhhhhhhh yessssss haha
Delyth Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 8:41:53 PM
I've just uploaded the 2 very short clips onto facebook and tagged you - it seemed easier !! Will scan her pic tomorrow. It'll be an excuse to meet grandpa Ffatal if nothing else !!
Delyth Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 8:15:09 PM
If you send me yr email I have a pic of my nephew on her a few years ago and I have a short video clip taken last Autumn :)
nissibay Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 8:03:13 PM
oh not far then really!! I will have a word with my O/H and get back to you asap.....
ps if you have any pix to hand i'd love to see her! thanx hope to speak to u soon
Delyth Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 7:58:02 PM
She's happy on her own or with a friend. We are in Derbyshire and it'd be a loan. If it didn't work she can come home no problem :) She's just best being a friend, doesn't kick and is not marey. Don't think I've seen her in season actually.
Smiler Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 7:26:54 PM
lyndilou is your friends pony a sec B ??? if so sec b would be ideal as a companion pony

also regarding the lami in ponies a lot of people keep smaller ponies for companions to other horses so a lot of them are just left out in the field doing nothing so combine grass and no exercise good combination for lami so sheen if you take on a pony it would be a good idea to walk out like someone suggested or lunge the pony on a regular basis to keep weight down or maybe find a friends child to ride said pony good luck
moatside Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 7:18:10 PM
Sheen - Sec D's are 13.2hh upwards (no upper limit)
nissibay Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 7:06:02 PM
Lynda i always thought welsh sec d's were normally between 13 to 15 hh? where in the country is your friend lynda? thanx
sab2 Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 6:54:39 PM
Ponies tend to get too fat Sheen so you will have to watch how much grass they have access to in the spring and summer, a good idea would be to walk out the two of them together if you have somebody to help, then you will be educating your baby but giving pony some work , and the pony will give your baby some confidence when meeting new things, Lyndilou or Delyth ponies sound perfect
nissibay Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 6:45:31 PM
Thanx Delyth, she sounds lovely!! would you be selling or loaning her?? also how is she when left alone grazing? where abouts are you based? you are right after looking on the rescue sites alot of the ponies have had laminitis, why is that??
Delyth Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 6:16:34 PM
If that doesn't work out we have Jess the pony here. She's already been doing the nanny/companion job for me for three years. She was my nephews pony but began headshaking. I've changed her diet and she's pretty good now but enjoys her retirement !! She's a lovely looking pony and easy to do. Never had lami and is as sound as a pound - please beware when taking a resue that they may well have had lami :( Jess is about 12.2hh bay and like a mini arab - very pretty !!
LYNDILOU Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 6:15:02 PM
he is only small Sheena not bigger than 12 hands , but what ever , you wouldnt get a sweeter nicer well ajusted pony ! I know my friend paid a lot for him but is only interested in getting a permenant loving home for him, anyone else interested in the offer, ? of helping ESMA and Brooke do PM me.
nissibay Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 5:47:32 PM
Oh thanx for all the comments ideas and offers!!! LyndiLou thanx i am looking for something smaller im affraid... natnnazim really thinking something older one baby is enough for me but thanx for the lovely offer :)

i do like the idea of rehoming a rescue as they will have been assessed i asume?? also it is only a loan isnt it?? which i like the idea off!!! i will look on the net to see what rescues are nearest to me, i think a quiet little gelding would be nice... oh no im all excited now!!! im sure re-homing a rescuse will be rewarding thanx guys great idea!! xxx
natntaz Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 5:20:02 PM
I have a welsh sec A gelding 10 months old.
I am willing to gift him to a good home
Pashon2001 Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 4:44:19 PM
Yes I would like to add that shetlands are difficult to keep their weight down and are escape artists!!!!! Also gelding would be better than mare, no hormones to deal with!
Pintoarabian, I have found that old mares don't quiet down, old geldings tend to wind down with age..............bit like men really lol!
Smiler Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 4:42:20 PM
I would also say a placid oldie from a rescue centre that way you would be helping a pony and making room for them to help another waiting to come in , or lyndilou's idea of this pony of her friends good luck
pintoarabian Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 3:59:04 PM
Sensible idea to look for an older pony but I couldn't recommend mine (not that I would part with them anyway). I have 3 Welsh Section A mares. They are 31, 30 and 25 respectively and gallop around like two year olds, especially the 31 year old.
LYNDILOU Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 2:57:40 PM
my friend has a welsh sec d pony gelding she wants a good home for , e mail me for details xx
edited to say dont buy one , but if you can donate £100 to the ESMA or Brooke I will secure this very sweet pony for you , he is grey and very kind
phoenixbruka Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 2:52:28 PM
fab idea... but do remember that shetties and minis are really quite hard work to look after properly with their weight

what about some of the oldies listed on the ads on here?

if you do get stuck, always my rebel :) need to find him a loan hom as companion or somewhere to turn him out.
Good luck with your searching maybe a shetland/dartmoor type be cheaper for you to look after x
