well as some of you will know my big boy is on foreseeable box rest! so he needs somethings to keep his mind ocupied which maybe easier said than done as he has a fairly short attention span
im not really sure what to get him hes quite distructive as he likes rolling lots!! i used to buy him stable licks (the big ones that go on the floor) but he rolls after he eats(bucket on head) and i found that he started breaking the plastic containers they come in which seemed a little dangerous!!
so all ideas please think hes really rather bored and keeps banging the door with his bad footwhich cant be good for it!!
Thanks in advance
x

Hay blocks completely forgot about them used to give them to my toothless older boy he loved them just not sure where I could get them from remember them being rather expensive though!!

This is a great topic. I have one on box rest at the moment, indefinately. He's not meant to be moving around too much. so snack balls etc are a no go. I have found some hayblocks made by SS, they are great especially if you can hang them up. Definately gonna check out the mirror, mine hates to be in alone too.

you got there before I could reply Wheelie Swede, with a hole all the way through and tied somewhere it cant be wedged, gives them hours of fun until they work out the way to get it wedged then you have to find somewhere new..gonna get Nabil a jolly ball soon, he loves throwing his rubber bucket around and I've recently given him a welly which he's not very impressed with he also has a gym ball (his 3rd) but it's only a matter of time before he kills it

HI Thanks guys! well i got him some likits and somehow ended up with two so tied them underneath each other which he seems to love. i had to battle with him to actually hang them up!! he also has a swede which he has taken a few nibbles out of!
Pasha - a stable mirror is an excellent idea hes overly dependent on my mare who has been being nurse and having to stay in with him well we tried to make our way out of the woods!! so a stable mirror may help solve this problem!!
I think when his hoof has healed alittle more ill get him a trickle feeder just at the moment his bed has to be exceptionally clean

Sadly I'm a box rest boredom breaking expert

Definitely get him a stable mirror (google Amigo Stable Mirrors - they have an offer on at the moment where you can get the backing board and all fixtures and fittings in one package for £50) - made a HUGE difference to Shesky who becomes very destructive on box rest - he would embark on grand scale DIY projects but since having his mirror is calm and happy and not even his feed bucket has been trodden on!

I was a bit worried at first as he does pull faces at the horse next door BUT he absolutely adores his best friend in the mirror and snuggles up for a mid-day snooze next to him... it is soo sweet! He also normally scoffs all his hay in a few hours, but since having his new best friend, still has hay left when I arrive back in the evening

I can't give Shesky any additional calories or sugar, so he has a rock salt block to lick, a jolly apple (looks like an apple and is meant to smell and taste like an apple) hung up to play head-butt with and a jolly ball to pick up and fling at anyone walking by (the apple and ball I got from Equestrian Clearance).

You can also get Dengie Lite Licks which are low in sugar - they do a respiratory one which I let him have for a few hours now and again and a garlic one which would be good in the summer... there is also a uncle jimmys sugar free snack ball thing which i've seen in my local feed merchant - I didn't get one as thankfully Shesky is back out again, but would get one in the future as they look tasty being mainly unmolassed sugar beet pulp I think.

The other really good thing to do is to split their hay ration up into 2 or more haynets and hang them in diffferent places around the stable... I also (if you can move them a tiny bit) put mine in eachothers stables for a few hours or a day, for a different perspective on the world, different smells and someones elses rugs to tear down and trample on

you could give him a small lick or veggie 'kebabs' hanging from the beams. A decahedron is a great toy - fill with big fibre nuts and he'll tumble it around for hours. Could he have his big tub lick for an hour, then remove it to save sugar overload and temptation to destroy the tub? Logs are good too - they nibble the bark and soft wood but keep an eye on him as some tend to eat chunks which can cause problems. A football inflated so that's it's not solid is also good as they can grab it gum it to death. Also less likely to burst it by jumping on it!

Hi

Buy him the all rubber, handled feed manger. Practically indestructable and easy to grab handle and throw it around stable or over the door provided you have the time to keep throwing it back for him

Our stallion has had one for some years and it is still in tact, regardless of his rough antics which it receives from teeth and hoof
