This mare is close to foaling but she doesn't seem to be in a hurry. Apparently, she's been running milk since yesterday. Have managed to see two others from the same farm foaling. Technology can be a wonderful thing!

OK so I've only just noticed that they post updates under the camera picture!

It says

The vet just left, and Captain got a thorough going-over! His IgG was low, as we expected, so he got a bag of plasma into him. He also got some antibiotics and vitamins. Last, but not least, he got a tet. shot for the tight tendon in his back foot and the vet made him a little splint to wear.

So that explains why he's walking in an odd way but my next question is why would he get a tet shot for a tight tendon?
Vera Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 11:58:46 PM
I have only been involved with a dozen or so foalings / new born foals and none of the 24hr old foals I have seen move like captain does.

What do you think, what's going on with the little chap? Actually not so little as he's ginormous!

The camera is back on.

pintoarabian Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 6:34:46 PM
The latest info posted on their message board. Hope all is well when the vet attends.

'April and Captain are doing well this morning and we are waiting a little longer on the vet. We wanted to give him enough time to absorb what colostrum he could from April, plus the double dose of colostrum supplement that I've given him before we test his IgG level to see if he needs plasma. Once things settle down a bit, he will be back on cam again. Thank you to everyone that has been supportive!'

It would be hardley surprising seeing that she was hauling him to his feet with an arm under his rib cage...

Latest update I have read is that the foal is still down and has not suckled. The mare still hasn't passed the afterbirth and that they are waiting for the vet.

cmj Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 11:46:24 AM
Oh God no, please don't let him have broken ribs, that is just utterly dreadful :(
Vera Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 11:29:27 AM
Hopefully this will work

Last I heard is that the foal was down and not suckling.

They referred to him as a 'dummy foal' but a fair few said that he's got broken ribs.......

Will go off and attach link which hopefully will be OK with Admin as it is another forum but an American one.

Oh dear, they've turned off the web cam now, lots of really nasty, horrible comments on another forum. I can appreciate why people had strong feelings about it all. I've looked at various other foalings of theirs on Youtube. It was lovely to see the mare and foal alive though and the people foaling obviously care about the animals and are doing what they think is best. The "full-on-intervention" route is not what a lot of us would choose but to villify the poor girl like that was hideous.

Glad we don't have a mare with them for foaling.......

Stumbled on this thread just in time to see the colt being born / heaved out.... thought it was touch and go for a bit - good to seem him up on his feet now!
paul_exe Posted - 13 Feb 2011 : 11:53:53 PM
I am not surprise the way she just handled that foal... broken ribs springs to mind.... hold the chest and rump, not right under the stomach..
bridie Posted - 13 Feb 2011 : 11:43:49 PM
This stud have lost a mare and foal and another 2 day old foal this year ....
paul_exe Posted - 13 Feb 2011 : 11:41:36 PM
They both look shattered..

That was pretty scarey to watch... If I have to assist I pull with the contractions towards to hocks, not straight out..

doug ault Posted - 13 Feb 2011 : 11:38:19 PM
at least mums starting to take an interest now, poor things exhausted
Vera Posted - 13 Feb 2011 : 11:37:39 PM
Wow that was hard to watch but I guess all's well that ends well.

Pulling so hard against the contractions though, made me wince and pulling out rather than down, poor mare - bloody big colt though!

She looks shattered and so she will be after almost 3 days of on/off labour.
LadyLuck1 Posted - 13 Feb 2011 : 11:30:00 PM
Why isnt he put in front of her? He looks massive poor mum.
