Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 5:04:03 PM If you have a look at the pig keeping guidelines on the defra (spit)website, you will come to a paragraph ''PIG WALKING LICENCE''. basicaly, if you want to take your pet pig for a walk you have to notify them of the route , this has to be aproved by them, it must not go near any retail food outlets or shops etc. you have to read it yourself to see the complexity of it all, you also have to have a licence to re-use a plastic container,(recycling)or feedbag, if you feed oats , barley , sugar beat, etc you are alloud to place it in layers in the same container but you must not mix it as this requires a millers licence........the lunacy goes on and on.... |

Posted - 18 Feb 2011 : 4:29:18 PM Not strange at all, they like destroying animals so why specifically do they need to know if they are or have been lame? If its not for foot and mouth (so they can destroy them) why else?? Sorry but I've had my fill of DEFRA, back in the f&m days they threatened to arrest me for not letting them view my goats and test them..............I nearly went to prison.................I don't nor ever have owned any GOATS!!!!! There are other reasons they have cocked up big time here, hence why I think they are a bunch of male parts, but not as useful. |

Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 10:11:51 PM And if they are lame they destroy them I suppose, Big Brother............. I presume you mean move them off the premises, not from one pen to another lol! |
carrots |
Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 9:00:28 PM They come once a year to inspect my pigs! they look at my vet log to confirm no lameness, if I have moved them (to move him requires at least 6 forms!!) and to comfirm that I have no more livestock on my holding licence and have added nothing to my herd number!!! Keeping just one pet pig is a nighmare!!!! people by micro pigs and think that it!!!! you would not believe the red tape.....I get offered pigs all the time because they grown into big pigs!!!!! |

Posted - 17 Feb 2011 : 11:22:51 AM just as well Defra do not look too closely at some Arab showing practises...... |
Pashon2001 |
Posted - 16 Feb 2011 : 8:40:18 PM What do you have to move carrots? I presume not the one pig! And what do they inspect the pig for exactly??? |
carrots |
Posted - 16 Feb 2011 : 7:47:02 PM I will say that the man from DEFRA who comes to inspect my movement documents, small holding and pig every year is well on the ball !!!! If I have any problems regarding movement etc, all I have to do is ring them and they are pretty good. |

Posted - 16 Feb 2011 : 01:04:43 AM Don't think DEFRA guys would be the problem anyhow , just other 'government' types who may treat it as chapter and verse. Always better to be forearmed ! |

Posted - 15 Feb 2011 : 08:04:05 AM Pashon , there are things in that document that I would not have thought about after 30 years and a good teacher to start me off !I only suggest people 'bear it in mind' not treat it as a bible ! what happens when you come up against the one (there may be !0 DEFRA guy who knows a horse is not a 'garden shed'? nothing more or less . |
Pashon2001 |
Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 10:47:44 PM Thats my point, the people you have mentioned NEW BETTER! and were not novice ignorant owners.........And you have to be a complete moron to think a horse doesnt need feeding, going to go and tell mine how lucky they are before they report me I've had DEFRA here, after imports, they hadnt got a clue, could have shown them the garden shed and they would have tried to vet it. |

Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 10:01:03 PM The stallion Dancer wasnt even hers & was just on loan to her, the owners had a terrible time trying to find out exactly what had happened to him. RIP Paddock Golden Dancer. |

Posted - 14 Feb 2011 : 9:53:12 PM Yes, I've read the article it is horrendous how those poor horses, particularly the stallion 'Dancer' suffered.
What totally disgusts me is the paltry fine and only a fifteen year ban, should have been at least a life ban.
Like you say carrots, you knew her, seen her at shows. etc, etc. Who would think that lovely pony at the show would be the subject of such abuse a few months down the line.
It goes to show we never know what is behind closed doors! or hidden away from sight, even in our immediate neighbourhood. It happens much more often than we think and when these come to light its very often seriously shocking. We all remember the Gucci situation and more lately Snape Farm and James Grey.
I don't discount the fact that people fall on hard times but that is no excuse for neglect and cruelty, there is help there if you ask for it.
Thanks for posting the link carrots. |

Posted - 11 Feb 2011 : 8:05:11 PM I have my dealing with DEFRA, having got a pet pig.. and I know you know it all Pashon2001 but like Callisto has pointed out some times people by ponies without thinking, we all know this happens, sometimes it results in cruelty by ignorance, the guidelines are there to help people to avoid this. Sometimes sadly people have horses and fail to follow any of these guidelines because they think they know better, thats cruelty with knowledge, the worse kind!!!!. there have been many high profile cases in the last few years, Jamie Grey, being the most pubisized. These guidelines are used by many rescue societies, and sometimes used in court to prove a case. Sadly this is the latest, http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/news/Horse-competitor-convicted-cruelty/article-3168266-detail/article.html I know this woman, I was used to seeing her at show, she had welsh B like my self, she was ever such a nice person!!!!! or we all thought so. These quide lines helped to convict her. |

Posted - 11 Feb 2011 : 4:56:06 PM Of course I know it all carrots, thought everyone knew that - my point was that IF people bother to read it before buying a horse (doubtful) does that make book knowledge all you need??? Cause thats what the loons will think. Written by idiots................. DEFRA round here can't tell the difference between one horse and another.............enough said............
