Hi,
  im having my horses clipped out this weekend. It is for showing reasons really, ive been advised by a very experienced arab person and good friend, to whip everything off (feathers, head etc). Just wondered what you guys do. I know january is an odd time to be clipping but we have a show in march, and i was told to allow for a little growth to come back. Be great de hear your stories. I do a blanket clip on all mine at the end of showing season leaving the legs on and I have just finished their full clips everything off.
This is my preference as my boys are usually in full work and they are all in hand horses at the moment. |

Thanks. Both mine are greys. the gelding is steel grey and my mare a dappley/rosey grey she changes all the time. The mare is ridden daily and although she hasn`t been clipped so far this time round, we did her last winter, and it benefited her a lot, by not sweating up. ( i must say though the legs were left on last time )my gelding has been with me just over two month and i know he was always clipped with his last owners as they did a lot of the big shows with him, xxx |

We clip all year round - but I do have two greys! I personally like them clipped but normally do it a week before the show. It is a personal choice but alot of horses in the ring are clipped. I wouldn't clip a chestnut or bay just before a show though - only face and bridle path. Mine don't seem at all affected by being clipped but I do leave legs on when the show season has finished till first show.

hiya , I clipped ramak out (full) 10 days ago i have left a small saddle patch and left his 'legs & feathers' on for protection
I will trim feathers/face again end of feb when the weather is not quite so horrid! I have only done his jaw line at the mo so he isnt fluffy! and as he is a horse that goes out for at least 7 hrs a day he needs protection!and he has very good heavyweight rugs.
I usually find his coat comes through really well in time for shows (march its usually lookin good!) I wouldnt clip the body out any later than end of this month although its different if you are showing in hand I believe |

hi
seems early to clip for shows. normally you wouldnt full body clip until much closer to the actual show. many are full body clipped so dont worry about that. i would just wait until closer to the show date! |

no i have had the vet have him checked and 100% clear. he is turned out daily for a minimum of 9 hours a day, he does have a thick coat though. i can assure you it is not for vanity purposes, hence the reason im asking for advice |

Just wondering then if sweating up with nothing on if there is something upsetting/worrying him - just a thought? |

Preparing to be shot down here.....but surely clipping for an in-hand show in March IS for vanity purposes? Why do you think it will "benefit him"? As Cinnypony said, why not just rug less so he won't sweat, and let him moult out naturally?
Having said this, my standpoint is that I don't go to any major shows before HOCON (1st week of June) as my horses are shown off grass - in-hand showing is primarily education for my youngsters.

Why not just rug less and then will be the right temperature???? It's not like he's in hard work where getting sweated up.... |

Yes its for in hand showing. He is ruuged up day and night but always seems to be warm and sometimes sweat on occasions. Im not one to just do it to a horse for vanity purposes, as i would hate for him to get cold, but i think it may bebefit him?. i did a really late clip last year on my welsh section c mare (end of feb) and her coat was amazing, and we had no sweatin etc, but im still not certain as she is a hardy little mare and i dont want my little man to be cold xxxxxxxxx |

I'm in the same position and STILL Cannot decide whether to clip or not!!!
gahh it's really bugging me and I know I need to make my mind up soon because it will be to late!!! I'm worried like stated above that I will clip out then we will have horrendous whether ect!!!
I'm also worried as tbh he isn't that hairy that I will clip out and if it gets colder he will start going hairy again which will completely ruin a summer coat!!!
But i can't decideeee

an arab doesnt have to be 'full body clipped' to be a show horse!
keep them rugged for now and plenty of grooming and i bet you can have their coats looking nice even in March! |

I don't clip our Arab he goes out everyday whatever the weather so I think he needs his coat, although I think many people would clip for the same reason as you, I wouldn't clip after the end of January as it can ruin the summer coat. |

Personally I wouldn't do legs and feathers at this end of the winter. What is going to keep him dry in bad weather, which I suspect will come as surely as night follows day. |
