Hi, well my boy that i posted about a week ago or so who has bolting issues inhand decided it was time he did it properly weds morning and hurt himself 
he did his normal run around stables but much to my horror went over the chain harrow (please dont ask me why it was out not got a clue ,i know accident waiting to happen )
so he eventually galloped into his field where i managed to catch him which is when he thought ouch!! i walked him round for a bit cause he can be a wimp left him half an hour and when i came back he was led down!! eventually i got him and it took two of us to get him in :( vet called immediately as horse was obviously in lots of pain her first thought was tendon although there was no swelling or heat her second thought was a badly timed infection! she couldnt find any area he was painful apart from the top of the tendon and she nerved blocked from the fetlock down with little improvement!!
so bandaging and box rest prescribed but as i had the farrier the next day get him to check for an infection.
well farrier is sure its in the foot but no sign of infection so he thinks it could be very bad bruising to the sole (horse is a bit flat footed)or worse hes broken his pedal bone.
so im to wait till monday and if horse is no better to call the vet for xrays.hes on two bute a day and obviously box rest and deep bed.
hes really very very lame but eating and drinking normally. im very concerned today as he seemed a bit worse.
I have absolutely no experience in hoof lame horses apart from infections. im struggling to work out how much better he should be if its just bruised? Any ones experiences i would love to here good or bad and what i can expect if it is broken which at the moment i feel is looking likely

well what a long day!! so we started with X-rays this morning this took two hours by which time i was quite warn out!!i went back to work and waited for the phone call.
vet phoned and said she nore a more senior vet who i have delt with alot could find a fracture  but that they would need him to come into the vets tomorrow so they could investigate further as they thought it could be a deep routed abcess.i have know transport of my own and he doesnt really load without my mare so small panic on my side and by this time im thinking its getting late bout 6.
well we went up the yard to do evening stables and found him led down... not too alarming only when he got up he couldnt move!!the best way i can explain it is he looked like a lamanitic rocking onto his back legs which where buckling (i have a commonly used picture in my head of a clipped chestnut for some reason)
so vet called out and found a small amount of puss by his frog!she dug out as much as she dare it appears to be a very deep abcess which goes under his frog! so hes had a strong pain killer and foot is now poulticed!! i have to see how much pain he is in in the morning and this depends on if he goes to horsepital as the abcess could of damaged his foot or of course there is still a chance it isnt it could also be a heamatoma from standing on the chain harrow

When Heron hurt his leg, we had to have a series of nerve blocks over a three week period - each time testing out a specific area. The vet had a theory about what it was but he undertook a very thorough set of tests - he was right but I'm glad he took the time and effort to be so thorough. It was tendon damage - an old injury that had completely unzipped. Heron can return to work as a hack but sadly his eventing days are over. Mind you, he is 18 now and he's represented three countries at international level so he deserves a rest.
Harley broke his pedal bone and like the horse already mentioned, had a year's rest and he's eventing now.
It all depends on the horse, where the injury is and the after care - main thing is to give him time. According to our vet, if Heron had been given adequate time when he was first injured (with a previous owner), he'd have been able to recover fully from his injury.

Hi thanks for the replies.
we expected the nerve block too help us determine where the hurt was but he was no different first time walking off and then 20 mintues later he seemed slightly better so it was difficult to tell. the vet did say the block can travel up the leg slightly after a certain amount of time!!
the vet also twitched him to nerve block him and he reacted rather well my yard owner thought hed been sedated!  and this seem to last a little while too!
dark angel it is something i was hoping to erm resolve work in progress hes actually imrpoved so much in the last year with his inhand issues but for some unknown reason decided to do it three mornings in a row after not doing it for months

if thet nerve block the fetlock but not the foot they can still show lame.xrays would def be my first course of action.
my friends eventer broke his pedal bone and had a year on box rest, hes back eventing and totally fine ,along job but with much patience and very careful management hes able to resume his full workload

If he was nerve-blocked from the fetlock down with little improvement, surely that would rule out the foot??? |

So sorry to hear about your boy. I hope he recovers quickly.
The issue of the bolting in hand is alarming and dangerous and needs to be sorted out before anyone else, human or animal gets hurt. Do you have anyone who could help you? I didn't see your past post about this, can you point me to it.

So sorry to hear about your lad :(
My friends mare broke her pedal bone several years ago, she used to be a succseful show jumper. I think she had about a year off, and with remedial shoeing has stayed sound for the last 5 years. Although she can't jump her anymore :(
