Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 10:02:42 AM Anyone who read my thread 2 days ago will know we lost our beautiful mare Posy to colic and the babies lost their nanny. She was a fab role model, calm well manered, tolerant but she would put them in their place if they overstepped the mark.
My question is, is it ideal to keep 2 colts on their own? Ozzy is an 8 month 3/4 arab and Jake is a 9 month knabstrupper. There are no other horses there at the moment to ep them company and movin them back to their origional (before weaning) yard isn't an option untill the spring. They are quite quiet at the moment and cant seem to understand where Posy has gone. They spend a lot of time just standing and listening around but it wont be long before they are back to their cheeky selves. What are your thoughts??

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 7:43:13 PM Our boys lived together with no problems until we had to put one on box rest for a muscle strain - 2 colts together can be very happy and are a lot less trouble to live with than one by himself, LOL!

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 6:49:37 PM when we had our 2 pure bred stallions (in pic below) we kept them together. the father was 14-16 and son was 8ish. They got on great out together, there was a mutual resect between them. We also managed to keep our 2 sec b stallions out together for one season until the the youngster started to challenge his seniour so we seperated them. I would definatly keep them together, you'll pick up on friction between them as they mature (if there is any). It would do them good to find themselves. |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 2:44:43 PM Emmo I wouldn't worry about them at all for the rest of the winter they will be fine together. If you can find "In charge" companion later in the year it will help them - otherwise one of them will take charge and as they get older the games can get alot rougher, which in my experience sometimes has its own problems. My young boys live together in 2/3's with and dominant older horse and the games don't get as rough :)
Very sorry to hear about your lovely posey. |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 12:53:43 PM Our 2 boys were out together from birth, through weaning and until they were 3. The one who was going to be shown that year starting coming in with bits missing, so they were separated them. I should say that it would be fine to keep yours together until the 'play-fighting' becomes a little too dangerous, before separating them.
Our young 4 yr old stallion has always been turned out with our 18 yr old gelding since weaning and they are the greatest of buddies. |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 12:53:12 PM My neighbour keeps her 4 Darty boys together. I mature stallion (about 8 or 9) - one rising 4 - One rising 3 and another rising 2 - and they all play together. The one rising 4 is the boss - and they all live very happily together - with no problems. The two middle boys got a bit O.T.T. when one of my girls came into season - but they were then moved into another bigger field away from the women - and everything is fine again. |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 12:04:43 PM Can't think of any problem with colts together except where one becomes dominant over the over and starts to bash him up cause mental and physical damage. Of course, if that happens you have to intervene in some way. Should be OK otherwise. I prefer that to having a colt on its own. Sorry about Posy.... |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 11:22:15 AM Yes they will definately remain together just wondered if they do ok without an older role model in with them if you see what i mean.
They are great together, so very different. Ozzy is quite highly strung, doing everything at 100mph and is definately the boss. Jake, despite being twich the size (to make 16.2+) is so laid back and chilled and is quite happy for Ozzy to take the lead in everything.
Thank you for your replies just want to make sure i do my best by my babies x |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 11:13:57 AM I'd say they're much better together. Plenty of people put their young boys together. My gelding and his playmate were together for a couple of years before they were gelded. They spent lots of time playing, often up on their back legs, but were great pals. In the end we separated them because it was time to start the education process and they needed a bit of focus. It'd be different if you were putting two strangers together for the first time, and yours are still very young and 'dependent'.
Sorry you've lost your precious mare. |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 11:04:22 AM A friend of mine has a stud and she's leaves the baby boys out together all the time and they don't seem to come to any harm as long as they don't all pick on one of the weaker ones. Unlikely if there are just the two of them.
Poor you having to worry about them after the awful trauma of losing Posy . |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 10:36:42 AM Sorry to read about your very sad loss of Posy..If it was me I'd see no problem in keeping both your boys together..I've got a weaned filly and colt and did have them both out together up until a couple of months ago but the colt was getting to ruff in his play so had to separate them.I've now got the colt out with a mare that will not put up with any messing and the filly is out with me 2 yr old filly..If i did have 2 colts they would deff be out together... |
