My poor Toffee went down with laminitis last week.

The x-rays are good, no rotation

The blood tests reveal that Tof has Cushings, which has bought on the laminitis and Insulin resistance.

Gutted, it an understatement

Praying things go well. Lost my boy to this many years ago, still broken hearted. However treatments are fantastic now and I'm sure you will be fine. Asking the Angels of healing to stand guard for him,
love and blessings xxx

So sorry to hear this but sounds like the damage is minimal which is good, awful condition Laminitis had one with it and always worry about it with the other two.

So sorry to hear your about your Toffee and Shaheena. Having had to deal with Laminitis in the past I know how upsetting and worrying it can be not to mention hard work to manage.
I have just read with interest the article in H & H 6th Jan about horses coping with the extreme cold we recently experienced.
The article was written by Keith Chandler MRCVS who states that whilst horses do not regard extrememly cold feet as uncomfortable and that research has shown that they can tolerate having their feet in iced water for 48hrs with no untoward effect. Blood supply in the lower limbs is reduced in very cold temperatures but horses bodies open up the blood supply to the feet from time to time, in order for the tissues to receive nutrition. However it does make you wonder as we had extreme cold for a lengthy period.

I do hope both your horses make good progress and that you can manage Toffee's Cushings Nat. Sounds like they will both have the best of care and attention.

Our Minnie had lami from the frosty ground and Caapria, too. My Farrier says that he has never had to put on as many h/b's, as he has over this winter! Minnie has her heart bars on and is as sound as a pound, so much so, she is working! Hates me too, Lynda, as she is only being fed that new sugar free hi fi...no hay!!

Caapria has ali plates on now as the h/b's are off...Farrier says she would be better in 'slippers' before going barefoot! She also hates me, but is getting weighed hay and has a tantrum when she has finished her hay and has to wait for the next lot, especially when the others are munching happily around her!!! Its a wonder the stable walls are still standing!

You caught it early. So sorry, been there (as most of us have) but Toffee does'nt know and so much more advice and treatment now for Cushings!
Mrs Vlacq Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 12:55:48 PM
It's just rotten luck - your girls have a wonderful life. Wishing her a speedy recovery from the lami and that she repsonds well to IR and cushings treatment. Things have progressed so much.
Lots of love from us all xx

So sorry to hear your news but like others have said they can live for many years happily on Pergolide, I know of one pony who has been on it for nearly 10 years and she is nearly 30 years old now and still lives a happy life.

Bazz lived on it for 3 years and was ok till she had the fall and fractured her shoulder which brought on the horrendous Laminitis but for every horrible ending there are plenty who live happily on it for many years.

Awful awful thing Laminitis is Makes me wonder if they are right about the extreme cold weather can bring it on with the awful weather we had at Christmas time there are so many going down with it its unreal at the moment.

Good luck.

Pasha Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 11:47:35 AM
So sorry for you and Toffee! Seems so many Arabs getting this now :(

Aside from "drugs" one thing that has really helped Pasha is daylight lights - he has one in his stable and one outside and they come in the morning and afternoon to give him summertime daylight - just have to make sure he is always on before it gets dark and doesn't go out until it's light

(((HUGS)))
