Posted - 25 Jan 2011 : 4:29:04 PM A little easier on her feet, I think but she is still on box rest so its difficult to tell.
I'm more concerned with her aggressive behaviour very sharp with her teeth!
Not happy, very misrable and I'm really not sure I'm doing the right thing in trying to treat her.
I shall have the Vet again at the end of the week/weekend and see what he thinks. |

Posted - 21 Jan 2011 : 11:02:34 AM Thats right Dot but now there is an equine equivalent they are not allowed to prescribe Pergolide to new cases |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 11:12:22 PM I coud be wrong on this but my understanding is that vets are allowed to go off licence when prescribing drugs only if there is no animal equivalent that does the same drug. Hence existing cases being treated off licence are fine when a new animal version of drug comes out but new cases off licence are a no no.
It is not vets that make the rules but doctors and the EU. Vets are considered luck to have a prescribing licence granted to them by the GMC and the RCV periodically has to get the right to do so renewed and reviewed on a regular basis. Sorry don't know how often this is, as yet this privilege has never been withdrawn but the option to do so exists. |

Posted - 19 Jan 2011 : 9:12:51 PM Googled it and found it from Hyperdrug for £151 for what looks like 160 tablets, so rounded up, 95 pence each... Worth a call. Check your vet doesn't charge you for writing the prescription though! X |

Posted - 19 Jan 2011 : 4:52:22 PM Oop sorry gang, I've given you 'duff gen' it is Prascend that Tof is on. All new cases have to be prescribed Prascend, any on-going cases can contine with Pergolide.
I have organised a Prescription from my Vets for the Metformin. They tell me that Sainsburys in Blackheath is the cheapest place around for it.
I would still like to know if I can buy Prascend any cheaper than £1.42 per tablet If I can my Vet will also issue a Prescription for that.
Can anyone help? |

Posted - 18 Jan 2011 : 12:07:54 PM I think it's like most things, guidelines are set and they are up for interpretation
Prascend isn't much more expensive than Pergolide 'from the vet', but works out aboiut double to what you would pay the Pharmacist for Pergolide... saying that, with the VAT increase and the fluctation in price of Pergolide, this may not be the case anymore
Think worst case it's a £1 a tablet or thereabouts... Pasha has to have 3 a day! |

Posted - 18 Jan 2011 : 12:03:23 PM Whether its illegal or not there are vets and vet hospitals prescribing it and have been for years. Wonder whether the horse version is more expensive. I'm just thankful it was prescribed otherwise I would have lost my treasured horse. |

Posted - 18 Jan 2011 : 12:00:06 PM very interesting, seeing as my vet has told me that now a equine version is available its ILLEGAL to prescribe the human version!
I think vets make it up as they go along... either that or some bend the rules and others dont! |

Posted - 18 Jan 2011 : 10:42:51 AM That's good Natalie!
My vet is still prescribing Pergolide for Pasha, however, as Shesky is a new case, he will have to have Prascend
I asked my pharmacist about Pergolide and she hadn't heard anything about it being fazed out and buys 3 months worth at a time for me, so at least i'll have a bit of warning - wondering how they can stop it when people are using it though? What is it being replaced with? |

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 10:36:33 PM Metformin you can get from any chemist - we got our vet to send a prescription to Morrisons and we repeated it each month. It depends how many tabs your girl has to go on - ours was on 36 tabs a day so it cost around £25 per month (its a human drug but works well on horses)
Now we have the glucose and diet sorted we don't need the Metformin anymore.

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 11:41:20 AM Metformin is very cheap from the vets - about £15 I think for a tub of them - but then of course you use loads!
Pergolide is cheapest from your chemist but the price varies Month by month, so try and ask your chemist to buy a few boxes at a time to secure the price (and supply) for you! We get through a box a month with Pasha as he has 3 per day and I'm soo grateful to our lovely pharmacist for doing this for us :) |
