I was wondering whether anyone had a chestnut Arab with what are known as Bend Or spots (after the TB most known for them), and if so, whether you have any photos I could use in a book? Images would have to be at a minimum of 300 dpi - if anyone does have any pics I could use I'd be most grateful.

The response to this thread has been far better than I ever hoped for! The generosity of AL members has been so great that I now have all the photos I need. Very many thanks to all those who have offered me photos, and my apologies (and thanks)to anyone who wanted to offer the use of photos - unfortunately I can only use so many.

I hope to make details of the book available before too long. In the meantime, thanks yet again. What a great community!

Our old Welsh Sec D had one about the size of your hand on her right rump, Gypsies always say it the sign of a "good" horse! She passed away before digital cameras so sorry no pics!

Hi Zareeba,
One of my geldings "Khebir Shahir" has some black spots on his neck....are these what you're looking for? If so, PM me your email address and I'll send them to you

Wow, what a response! It appears these spots are more common than I had thought. If anyone was (or can take) photos of these spots that they would be willing to let me use, please PM me and I'll give you my email address.

Cheers

Our wonderfull (purebred) chestnut girl, C.A.S. Kazurai has one of these dark spots on her o/s flank, it's about 3 ins in diameter. Always been curious about it as trhe hair looks to be almost black!

Which family, Mrs. Vlacq? Garnet had this marking but I don't know whether I have a good enough photo.
Spangle Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 7:56:42 PM
My part bred mare I used to have had them- one large black on her face and another on the point of her buttock- something telling me there was one on a flank but not sure that there was- will see if I can find any pics of them- not sure they will be good enough quality though. I called them ink spots.

ETA: Yes there was one on a flank- quite an obvious one- will post a pic of it- although its not a great pic of her.

The one on her buttock

The one on her face seems quite pale here- itshalfway between eye and nostril with vein running under it.

And the one on her flank

our half bred mare had one on her rump we thought it was a liver spot or birthmark

Sunny has one of these on his flank. Its only really prominent in his summer coat.
Mrs Vlacq Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 6:46:49 PM
we have a family that passes these on and as it happens our Anglo gelding is chestnut, though he has the fewest Bend Or spots of all his siblings and half siblings. One prominent one on his face. His dam is chestnut (arab, Lorindol) and has a shady patch on her flank and his dark bay full sister could pass for an appaloosa!
His sire was dark bay TB.

Thanks, Helen - sorry I should have been more precise - the spots you describe are known as Birdcatcher spots - they are actually not all that common but my chestnut Arab gelding has them. The spots I mean are dark spots on a chestnut horse - sometimes dark brown or somteimes black. I've seen them on Thoroughbreds and Thoroughbred crosses, but I must admit, never on Arabs.

The book is about Arab horses - can't say more at this stage, but it's been an ongoing project for several years. Will let you know more in due course.

Cheers

Lesley

I have a chestnut arab with white spots. Don't think I have any suitable pictures that show the spots. Could try to take some though. I would be interested to know what the book is about?
