Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 1:57:36 PM well, i went to the nfu and i got quote either £46 per month for £5000 vet fees, public liability £1m, and loss of animal for value of £2000 or....£63 for the previous plus loss of use? does this sound right? My friend knows a breeder who has a TB racer, mare in foal value £23,000!!! and he only pays £83 per month for the same cover? Ive also looked online and the prices aren't much better. Why can't I find a decent price or is that about what im going to have to pay?! At the moment I'm really only concerned about the vet fees. Any help much appreciated
just got off the phone to scottish equesrtian and my mare is covered for £4000 vet fees 1m public liability and death for £1000 for £22 a month! After shes foaled i might to reduce the vet fees to £1500 for £19 a month? Its such a relief to know shes covered! |

Posted - 24 Jan 2011 : 3:58:07 PM I would not reduce the vet fees if you can a afford not to as bill can rack up over £1500 quickly you just never know
My old TB for her back 15years ago was over £3300 over a year |

Posted - 24 Jan 2011 : 2:23:54 PM I've been with Scottish Equestrian for about 4 years now but through a Broker. Have had no problems with claims at all. Infact they will carry on insuring for vets fees till age 20 as long as insured before age 16 (I think). I have reduced my 17 y.o.geldings value to £500 just to get vet fee cover. When I had 3 horses my Broker told me I could get discount for multi horses. So if youre with Scotish Equestrian just ask about discount - I definitey got it. If anyone wants Broker's number please pm me |

Posted - 24 Jan 2011 : 10:59:10 AM nfu doubled my premium on bruka as soon as he turned 17 to £500 a year, basically pricing themselves out of the market so I would cancel , which I did.
Its a standard underwriting move that insurersuse, they cant cancelon you for no reason, but make sure you cancel on them!
Im with SEIB for boysie at £35 per month full cover inc £5k vets fees (without loss of use)
NFB are narrowing their book and I think want rid of the equine side

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 10:18:24 PM I think i am going to stay with NFU with the horses worried about having to fight to get bill paid if something goes wrong but now worried as read on face book that their car insurance has shot up as well and i have my Defender with them due next month as well as my road tax which has come in at £435 this year i need to sell more fish and chips |

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 9:43:27 PM Hi , if you're employed in a veterinary practice Petplan give a discount. My dogs are with Petplan, excellent service for whippets who crash into trees at 30 miles an hour ! Our horses are with the NFU can't fault them for service and payment, like other people on here I've been with them for years so get a reasonable discount, maybe they're increasing their prices on new business to compensate ?

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 8:49:50 PM I really don't understand why my quote with them is so much!! but im going to talk to scottish equestrian they've given me a good(ish) quote. I was thinking if it would be possible for me to lower the vet fees once shes foaled?!coz she's perfectly healthy and i work at a vets so i can get as much free advice as i need. I never thought insuring a horse would be so stressful.

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 5:02:17 PM We pay £29.04 per month with NFU for a horse valued at £2000 (didn't increase it when he changed from baby to superstar ), vets fees £5000, death of horse, and Rice trailer. The trailer accounts for £2.50 per month of that and our bonus as long-standing clients gave us about £6.50 a month off, so yours seems rather a lot. We don't have public liability as we are covered by BHS and BDS membership, but even so, your quote sounds rather a lot. Could you reduce the quote by taking a bigger excess? Our excess has just gone up to £215 per incident but to be honest we are lucky they cover us at all with all the claims we had for the 'low maintenance cob' and the 'accident-prone baby'. It used to annoy me that Garnet carried the same excess as the other two when they were all on the same policy cos she was hardly ever poorly, bless her. NFU do give excellent cover eg transport and part livery if horse is hospitalised (as our Jim was) or £500 of alternative husbandry which was brilliant for feed, hay to replace haylage which is included in livery, and shavings when Red had to stay in all summer with laminitis. |

Posted - 15 Jan 2011 : 9:48:06 PM Just insured my 8 month old foal for £1000 pounds third party fire theft and death for about £220 on monthly instalments with SEIB, should have been £20 more but I had a voucher we won at Robin Hood, I checked out how much it would cost with pet plan before taking out with SEIB and it would have cost me more even without the voucher.

Posted - 15 Jan 2011 : 8:34:09 PM I'm with Petplan and pay £29.65 per month with vet fee and public liability but only £1k payout for death. Before i took it out i asked my vet which insurance company is best for paying out, he said Petplan and NFU. He said some other which don't pay out too which i won't name. It's best to go the a company who you know will pay out when needed. |

Posted - 15 Jan 2011 : 8:15:11 PM I'm with the NFU too, I pay monthly and it works out a just short of £100 per month for my 3. I really can't complain as they paid out £5000 vet fees on Po during 2008-09. Sorry if we've made your cover go up but she's worth it and says thank you
The NFU were also fantastic when my horse died and I was sobbing down the phone so much I couldn't speak, trying very hard to ask them if they wanted me to keep her body, phew, they were so patient and understanding.
I have my car with them too and I think all that and all the horses for the 7 years I've been with them I get on going discounts. Really recommend them but I guess like all of us they are really feeling the pinch and therefore so will we

Posted - 14 Jan 2011 : 10:49:52 PM Just wondering - with our dogs we get multi pet discount - are there any horse insurers that do multi horse discount?
Somehow I'll be surprised! |

Posted - 14 Jan 2011 : 10:44:46 PM I've just had my renewal in from the NFU and despite the fact that I have never claimed nor has anything changed with the horses on the policy, it has gone up a disgusting £185 from last year!!! When I questioned this I was told that all insurance has risen.
I wouldn't have bothered too much if it had gone up 5%, but 25% is quite another matter!! I've managed to get the same standard of policy from another Insurer for £290 less than the NFU were quoting. I did this on line with Scottish Equestrian Insurance Services. Horses are expensive enough to care for without the Insurance companies ripping us off too!!!
There, rant over! |

Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 10:35:13 PM Im so sorry to hear you lost your mare. I know insurance can't bring them back but its reassuring to know you've got back up.Thanks for your help. As Iv'e said its better to be safe than sorry. Ive heard from a few people that the NFU were good and i can go in to their office and speak to someone face to face to make sure I get everything I need. |

Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 8:39:26 PM Hi there, we're with the NFU and I took out foal cover for my mare a few years ago, it cost me about £60 and I nearly didn't take but thank god I did! We unfortunatly lost the mare at 2 months before foaling, she just dropped dead after a previously healthy 10 years , the NFU were brilliant they covered the cost of the mare (already insured with them), covering fees and disposal fees. It was awful, but they were so kind and efficent settling the claim. Its all abit fuzy now but I'm sure the policey covered the vets fees for a foal until 60 days which is why we wanted it really. |

Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 6:35:29 PM thanks for your help. I forgot to mention vet fees but i think thats pretty standard. The reason i was hoping the foal would be covered is just incase something happens while my mare gives birth, for example incase the foal broke its leg or needed vet treatment. I know its very unlikley but I just wanted to check. If no ones covers the foal until 30 days well I suppose theres nothing I can do. Thanks again |

Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 5:11:56 PM Sorry just rereading what i put the vet bill was Alliya's that was covered for not Roxy's but it meant that i did not pay the full £1700 bill for the pair just the part that was Alliya's but still left me with a £500 bill for Roxy
There was one that would cover the loss of a stillborn or under 30 days i think it was SEIB but might be wrong on who i spoke to,but it was only if you had paid a very large stud and it was over 12 weeks but no more than 6 months so more for TB where you where paying thousands |
Pashon2001 |
Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 4:20:47 PM As far as I know no insurance company will cover a foal until it is 30 days old, and even then it is only for accidental death/injury and to the value of the covering. It would not be covered for sickness/disease until 6 months of age. |

Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 3:24:43 PM Roxy was not covered until she was 30 days this was with NFU i do not know of any who will cover a new born foal. I think there was one that will cover a covering cost if you lost the foal but was only the stud fee and had to be taken out a certain time but saying that i had problems and Alliya was covered for her time at the vets as she retained her placenta for 2 days and would not Roxy feed until it was sorted which meant that Roxy had to have plasma as well so at least a good bit of my bill was covered which helped as they paid out quickly and have never put a exclusion on her foaling ether.Have you told your insurance that she is in foal |
