My mare is moulting like crazy! She grew her winter coat early, almost as if she knew we were in for a hard winter. Now she's losing it in handfuls!

Could this mean she knows we have a mild spring ahead? I certainly hope so

Are anyone elses horses moulting yet?

My two are moulting too... especially the older girl Melody, her coat is coming out by the handfull, although her daughter Sassy isn't just as bad!!

Yep - one of mine too, she's rugged and in at night. Hair is coming out in handfulls and she's quite itchy. Our older girl, same routine and rugged, is not shedding a single hair.

Yep, one of mine is moulting loads already, roll on spring!
ashquar Posted - 22 Jan 2011 : 9:27:10 PM
My two Arabs are not moulting but the Newfie is like crazy.
We are in Accrington.
rosie Posted - 22 Jan 2011 : 5:38:39 PM
Mine are all firmly hanging onto their coats still.

Think they maybe know something I don't.

Old farmers tale is that when there is snow laying in the hedgebacks 'there is more on the way to shift it!!!'

Mine isn't moulting yet!
I can't wait though, his coat is so scruffy! He looks like a woolley mammoth!
Pasha Posted - 09 Jan 2011 : 10:21:09 PM
All ours are moulting - even little Pasha, bless him, you touch his blaze and loads of White hairs come out! So happy he is still keeping up with the youngsters :D
Vera Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 9:29:29 PM
Funny you bring this up because I noticed that Dennis is moulting too. Only his unclipped bits but its a start!
pat day Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 7:57:46 PM
Mine arn't Helena, although rugged inside and out, we are a bit more exposed up here, although only a stones throw, as the crow flies, from you.

You tell Neema to hang on for a while yet.!!!!
Moira Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 6:55:28 PM
Zak usually starts moulting between Christmas & New Year but this year he really outdid himself and by the end of November his hair was coming out in handfulls He doesn't seem to be cold though and is only in a 100g rug just now. My other two are sensible and are hanging onto their woolies for now. Just looked outside and it is
arabianrio Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 10:41:12 AM
No Laddie is hanging on to his coat.My Rio used to shed his coat and was practically in his summer wear by begginning of March....trouble is he used to grow an early winter one in late August!
Eeyore Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 09:30:49 AM
Phew, glad it's not just my girl who has started moulting! I was beginning to think she was on her own there

We are in the midlands but in the Staffordshire moorlands so quite high up and yes, it's snowing this morning

She is not rugged either just like your girl Sushi. She is turnout rug phobic and has been happy unrugged for the last 9 years. This year though when it dropped to minus 13 I decided she would have to try and get over her phobia for her own good! I mean minus 13 is ridiculous! She wasn't cold though even at that temperature, she just looked completely brassed off (much like me). She is getting older and the winters are getting awful. We have made progress but she is not wearing her rug regularly yet and it's only a lightweight.

Maybe she has noticed the daylight lengthening, can't say I've noticed lol
doug ault Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 07:40:43 AM
Hope ours don't start yet, as we woke up to 3 inches of snow and it is still snowing heavily
Callisto Posted - 07 Jan 2011 : 12:06:47 AM
Our 2 mares are moulting, the 4 geldings are not...
glentullock Posted - 06 Jan 2011 : 10:25:50 PM

debs Posted - 06 Jan 2011 : 8:59:29 PM
I thought I was imagining a few hairs here and there yesterday...........yay that means spring is on its way!!!
Sushi Posted - 06 Jan 2011 : 8:50:32 PM
Really pleased to read this thread my mare is also moulting really well in herself not rugged out 24/7 with access at all times to stables. The two rugged geldings with her haven't shed a hair!!!!
kathleen Posted - 06 Jan 2011 : 7:31:05 PM
Roxy is moulting lots as well
xsara Posted - 06 Jan 2011 : 5:54:20 PM
I noticed today the dog has started to shed which is a night mare as she rolls in the living room and place is white in seconds but have my deshredder brush ready this time. But I have noticed as mine are clipped that there summers coats are comming through already it is prob to do with light and noticed just last couple of days how much brighter it is in morns and how the nights are stretching.
Fee Posted - 06 Jan 2011 : 5:11:37 PM
Po did this every year that i had her on a livery. End of dec beg of jan she would have a 'mini shed' it would only last a week or so, not sure why, thought it was to do with the daylight/routine change around the solstice maybe? Strange but she hasn't done it this year, only difference is that she now has an open stable set up.
