had my loveley vet out today to do A's injections; he hasn't had any since 2005 ... his first lot when he was a yearling. He also looked at his teeth and did a lot of rasping of nasty hooks and jagged bits. A was very good indeed. He was very snorty with Lovely John the Vet, but he hasn't had much to do with men since he joined us in Kent and he may have had some poor experiences with them in the past? Anyway, he soon settled down and was his usual biddable self. John approved the diet, (fibre, more fibre, lots of excellent turnout in huge fields, Pink Powder, garlic and Dengie Pasture Mix) and said he looked "a bit better than the original photograph". A has put on a bit of weight (402kilos now from 320kilos when he arrived three weeks ago)and he is getting more interested in life and especially food! We aren't pushing loads on him though as his tummy and general well being needs slow and steady.
John horrified me by saying -" he seems to have had a catastrophic accident at some time - pssibly earlier in the year, and broken two ribs which appear to have healed now and are not causing direct pain, but may have adhesions in the chest and pleural cavity" AAGGHH A has a hole in his skin half way down his left side. It is about a large 50p size and shape. There is the remains of jagged skin healed into the dip and a white hair patch. We had noticed it but not known what it was. It is apparently painless to touch. The two ribs behind it have raised lines on the bone which can be felt on firm touch. John thinks it was possibly a result of being staked, or being pulled over ( a stunt fall in the film making?) and the saddle tree breaking and going into his side. He doesn't think at the moment it is causing any trouble, and A certainly doesn't have any problem breathing after exertion (like galloping round the 20acre field with his little piebald mate the rescued Gipsy Cob).
Otherwise he said, he's lovely, beautiful temperament and should, fingers crossed be OK to get on in about three months time. Meanwhile, continue the gentle ground work. (Quiet 10mins of lunging/longlining/walking up the lane etc.) A has scars of infected rain scald, a number of cold lumps and bumps on his legs, but is sound at present, thick lines on his front feet from very poor feeding and/or none, and scars from untreated chronic eye infectionsd on both sides of his face. His sight is fine (thank goodness - I had been worried about it) and he has prescribed anti biotics to flush through his eyes/nose/ sinuses to polish off the residual chronic infection.
When I phoned Gary The Dealer to enquire about any circumstances of the accident causing the broken ribs, his phone is "No Longer Available". The Irish Grand Vet hasn't sent the vet's cert to my insurers either as he promised he would, and they are now demanding it in 5 days or that I get another. I do get rather beady eyed about such people. Just as well they do not reside in England that's all.
Anyone been able to ride a horse with previously broken ribs? What saddle did you use? John the Vet seems to think it won't be a problem.
Otherwise, he's fine, very sweet and very affectionate. I've had long tel conversations with his dam's owner, his dam's breeder and his dam's producer - all of whom spent ages telling me what a perfect staar she was/is! The producer also had the sire for a while and said he was a lovely horse and that by description Aragon is his body double in colour and markings and overall shape - other than being about 150kilos underweight!
So - there we are. A long job ahead but Aragon is much loved and seems to like being fussed over and bought lots of rugs and having loads of grooming and being played with! (Unlike Fatty Crabett Bomb who is still, after all these years, a bit of a "I might let you polish me for hours - IF I'm in the mood - today is not looking good ...". |

poor Aragon he must have had a real hard time off it and has not had an easy time of life so far. But hopefully now he will be able to experience life to the full with a kind loving owner to care and love him for the rest of his life. |

Oh Zooscat thank goodness you acted on impulse and bought him, and what a dear sweet soul he is not to hold his previous maltreatment and neglect against all humans. So pleased to hear about his progress, and long may it continue  |

I just had a look, his lovely and he looks just like Arabi the face is very similar and the body shape, although Arabi has a big belly at the moment, I will try and post some pictures of Arabi although I have never done it before, if you PM me your email I can send them to you that way, I am sure he will be a brilliant horse and repay your kindness for rescuing him. x |

Hi PB - did you see the pics my friend Jeannie took on 5/11/2010? They are on page 6 (at the moment) under Aragon has arrived and on the third page of the post. He is looking a lot better now, even though its only two and a half weeks ago. Less stressed and more shiny and a bit more filled out. In those pics you can see the white mark where the stake/ broken saddle tree went in. Jeannie will be coming to take some more pics soon so will post those asap and hopefully you will think that he seems better too.

Oh bless him at least his mouth is sorted now all down to you, we bought a mare a few months back she was in a bit of a state, dentist said her mouth was ulcerated and not been done in years in his opinion, why do people leave these things it is beyond me, Aragon is so lucky to have you Zooscat, I am so glad you have him, I just keep thinking if my lovely Arabi was in that situation he would be so confused and would end up being a nervous wreck, please post some photo's of him would love to see him. |

That's a good idea, Honey! I managed to get hold of Gary The Dealer by devious means (looking up his numbers on the internet!) and asked him politely about the broken ribs and extensive galling scars etc etc. He told me that "all the film horses have those white marks - it's the mediaval armour and tack they put on them - they wont hurt him"  Words failed me - fortunately! He said he couldn't have been pulled over cos "they (the film persons) only put little "wee lads" on him cos he couldn't gallop with the big heavy men". I have been quietly mithering away about the whole thing and feel really so upset about it. Ryazan (aka Fatty Crabbet Bomb)was very cruelly treated in the "home" I got him from, but he's a different sort of personality - he's a real "Yeah - bring it on" type and will and did fight back if he sees any sort of danger. He's never lost that attitude which makes him a bit too sensitive(!) for some people. Poor Aragon is such a sweet and genuine horse that he wont have fought back but tried his best whilst in dreadful pain. He was so good with John The Vet when he spent ages on the dreadful teeth. When John tried to do the same with Ry, all those years ago, Ry took him (a large strong man)me (Ditto woman) and the Vet student - another tough type, completely off our collective feet as he reared straight up the minute the gag was produced - let alone opened! And that was just for openers! He's no trouble at all now - but both of us know - he could be if he felt like it!
Poor horse. I hope he manages to get his life back. He really deserves it. |

Glad hes coming on, what a shock about his injury, and how awful to think of what hes been through obviously had a very hard life. As for broken ribs we had a anglo arab youngster break two ribs on box rest, on top of a broken jaw and fractured neck, and cuts to the bone. and shes now jumping 1m40, doing intermediate dressage and starting a xc and eventually eventing career with her current owner. as long as they have had time to heal. Just hope hes not terrified of being saddled up and ridden. I would be suing the vet for the majority of the cost of A if he failed to pick up or mention the obvious aliments of A. As it would have been good bargening power to get his price reduced. Just makes me feel sick how any one could treat a horse the way A has in his past life. |

What a lucky boy to have you, you star. I'm sure he will repay ten fold.
