*UPDATED* 18/11/10

okay so here is my initial ideas and designs, inspired my my research, I have also decided on Black and gold in colouring, which I know aren't traditional colours from my research I have found that these colours are going to be the easiest to get hold of and aren't too much variation in the colours where as if I was choosing a burgandy or a plum red (which I originally liked the idea of) I think I would have a hard job finding the same shades ect

So these are rough sketches just of the general style/outlines ect no detail, but I just want some opinions on which styles people are liking all have been inspired but my research but altered to make them original

Oh I forgot to number them so shall we say

1. 4.
2. 5.
3. 6.

Any advice/opinions and ideas welcome I'm loving this project so far can't wait to start buying materials and get the sewing machine out!!!

(Sorry they are quite faint I have tried altering the contrast in iphoto haha)

------------ Original post-------
I was just wondering does anyone know what the traditional authentic bedouin bridles are made out of... the head piece/cheek pieces

and also where you can source it

I am currently designing a native arabian costume for Tiger which I am going to make, one for my portfolio, but also to have a crack at it!! And hopefully enter the Native Costume class at the UK Gold show next year!!!

and was just wondering what it is as I have always used the cable halters, from what I can see it's wool based, but im not sure haha

I have done alot of research into the costumes, and I especially love the elaborate styled american costumes that they use in their costume classes although they may not be entirely authentic haha I really loved them

It's such a shame that we have basically scrapped all our native costume classes... I think I'm mainly making one to take pretty pictures HAHA!!!

I will upload my original designs to see what you all like, as I am struggling on which design to go forward with!!!

So going back to my original question if anyone knows what exactly it is and where I can source it would be a greta help!!!

I like 4 and 6. BTW your drawings are great! If I did a picture of designs, people would have trouble seeing what species the horse was!

Tiger will look fab with his outfit too.

I really miss this class at Malvern, when my OH and I first went we were stunned by the class and even my non horsey teenager enjoyed it, I was so sad that they scrapped it, bloody health and safety me thinks as if we are not aware that everything we do with our beloved horses carry a certain amount of risk! anyway I would love to see a return to a beautiful display. No 2 and 6 are my favourites

Thank you for that advice Mrs Vlacq, I have been thinking of buying one of the cheap webbing bridles and as you said got over that so I know it's going to hold up!!!

I will upload my original drawings so you can all have a peek!!!

If you are making your own I would suggest using a webbing / biothane base and dressing over it, that way you know it is safe and strong enough for purpose
Good luck, keep us posted!

I think we really need to try and get the message out about this class and show everyone the support we have for it and maybe they will start introducing it back into the show schedule of the bigger shows!!! It would be wonderful!!!

Although I am going to incorporate some of the modern hollywood styled features into my design which may not be in favor with the judges in the class but I do think it would be nice to support it and let people enjoy some beautiful costumes on some beautiful horses!!!

Oh so glad you posted this! We have a picture of my mum's old Gelding Mishlah in the costime class at Ascot many moons ago and I would love to dress Shesky up - think he would look fab! Might see you in the class Jess!

They come in real wool, heavy cotton or acrylic, depending. A friend had an acrylic one made to order in Egypt, as she is allergic to handling wool.

It might be worth your while looking at ebay - I got one from Jordan at a price (inc postage) that I couldn't have bought the wool and decorations for here, let alone my time in making it!

I too think it is a shame that the native costume classes have gone - but I prefer Middle Eastern authentic tack, not the Hollywood version!
