I put my horse Laddie out today in the awful weather (he really wanted to go out)but later than usual.After about 1.1/2hrs I thought I would just go and check him out as the wind and rain seemed ceaseless. OMG when I got to the field he was standing stock still back against the wild wind, rug wrapped up around his shoulders!!!!
The first time anything like this has happened to my horse in all my years of keeping horses!
I know everything was done up because the fastening clips are really hard to do up and I spend an age making sure they are in properly. But one of the cross surcingles was nevertheless undone (the back one ) and yet the fillet strap was still done up. The rug is a Rambo - quite a snug fit so how he manged to manoeuvre it up ...only god knows. All I know is I am thankful he did not panic...just stood there getting wetter and wetter on his back and rear end....he is now safely ensconced in his stable munching hay and dried off.
Not sure if I can trust this rug again though!Maybe it wasn't the rug and I should just call him Houdini!!!!!

i used to have a youngster that would getout of her rugs,all straps still intact rugs inside out where she had got outof them,andwe had leg straps,fillet string, front surcingles,and even when we had two rugs on and the straps intwined with each other she would get them off and leave in the mud.Rugs can be dangerous in the windy weather but glad he was sane and waited on his mummy to rescue him. |

I think it would be really nice not to dock them . Probably though you will fall foul of some DEFRA or other such org' laws???
Shame as I think the sheep would prefer it! |

Incidently, we do not castrate our male lambs we don't find it is necessary to inflict pain needlessly. The rings are for de tailing the pedigree ones that have to have short tails.
We would prefer not to do this also. What do others think? Docking dogs tails is frowned upon now so maybe it is time to stop docking sheep. The badger faced welsh sheep we have go undocked and use their tails to keep warm in the winter, I have even seen them wrap their tails around their lambs when sleeping. |

Mmmh! While I am glad you have them now, it does make me wonder what is happening to the postal system. Wales seems to be a bit erratic on deliveries but collections are usually okay. Hope you are finding them useful.

Yes if you pm me I will snd you some tomorrow. As sab2 says, you can use rubber bands, but the rings are perfect, just like the ones supplied with the rugs. |

All my Rambo rugs have come complete with rubber rings on the "t" bit, which does mean they fit well, and also makes them easy to fasten and unfasten. Have they stopped supplying them then? |

Till the lamb rings arrive you could always use an elastic band, we get them free with the postman  , the royal mail must go through them by the ton. |

Are the fastenings metal? If they are the type I think they are I could send you some lamb castration rings to put over the 'T' shape that fits into the keeper. This keeps the fastening snug. This has been very successful for me. As the strap came undone it probably wasn't the absence of leg straps, just the movement of the rug in the wind. If this doesn't make sense then the fasteners are different.
So glad he was sensible, this could have been another tragedy in the making. |

Gosh thank goodness he didn't panic! Having seen Ishara lose the plot when a rug came undone it's not something I ever want to witness again. I won't use leg straps now either and all her's have fillet strings but I do worry about them blowing up in all this wind. What a good sensible boy you have. |

I have nothing but Rambos, and live in a very windy place, but have never had a problem, despite the fact that I have to take the fillet strings off all Zaharoff's rugs, otherwise he just stands at the gate ( if you knew him it would make sense). The worst that has happened in high winds is the very back has blown over his bum, and that hasn't happened often. Strangely enough, although he can't stand fillet strings, and is generally Mr Spooky, he didn't seem to mind having a a bare bum . The rest of the rug stayed put-- I do make sure the cross surcingles are fitted snugly. I see a lot of other horses in fields with cross surcingles that are fastened very loosely.
Never had any problem with any of the others, who have fillet strings, shifting at all.
I don't like leg straps--potentially dangerous, and, although I have never tried, I am certain Zaharoff would hate them

Yeah it does happen especially in high winds but it happens to any rug if there are no leg straps |

I have had problems with my Rambo and also my Rhino rug doing this only when windy though, maybe your saddler could put some leg straps on for you, good luck lets hope it dose not do it again, pleased that he didnt panic bless him what a good boy . |

It is excessively windy here today Sandy - I've not had that problem with any of ours with just a fillet string, but must admit that this morning I was very glad that Buzz's Mark Todd rug has leg straps, as it was billowing around rather madly. We kept the arabs in.
Maybe don't use the Rambo if it is very windy? (or it might just be a one off fluke).
