HAHA

Tiger is running up the walls at the moment, I haven't ridden him since the beginning of October (It's his holiday) and he's going MENTALLLL HAHAH

Although it's getting to the point where it's not funny anymore... and I have done something I thought I would never have to do.... Buy him some calmer

He wasn't this mental last winter, or the winter before (if I can call it winter yet) The only time he's been this mental is when we first has him as a stallion!!!

He reared up on my grandad the other day something he has never done since he was a stallion, and this is a problem as my grandad gets him in 3 times a week for me when I'm at college!!! This morning I was leading him up the field went to open the gate he suddenly decided to charge through it ripped his rug, dragged me through it and kicked me in the leg (by accident!!!) and continued to rear up when I told him off!!!

What has got into him!!! I rode him yesterday for the first time since the beginning of october to try and calm him down even though he did his old dropping shoulder techniques to mess around but I can't really ride him or lunge him coz I don't have an arena and the ground in bad already!!!

What am I going to do with my crazy beast HAHAHA

The only thing I can think of thats sending him like this is coz he's has his friend now (an 8 month old mini shetty colt) and he's showing off to him and getting all protective over me!!!

Anyone elses horses feeling the cold winter wind up their tail

sounds like gizzy and calmers don't work on her. Like you we have no suitable riding area and its road work or turned out, but she can go out everyday as fresh as the day before. and riding is quiet dangerous cause shes just so wound up and silly and becomes over spooky at everything to the point she even fears what on the side of the hedge she can't see. So I give her a holiday for the real bad winter months and can't keep her sane.

hi there jess, well he sounds pretty much like my boy, when I don't work him for a while and this can be as short as 2 weeks, he goes mad, crazy horse comes out. So usually after the endurance season i give him a long rest up until new year but I'v decided not to this year, I'm not riding as much as when I'm training but porbs just 3 times a week, and he's alot better, I can still see the cheekyness in his eyes but he's a bit more well behaved lol.
He could really do with a 32km ride tomorrow tbh :P
these horses just love their work thats what it is =]

Well he is acting like a wild tiger haha!!!

Caryn of course I cut his feed down, he's a good doer anyway so doesn't need much all year but he literally just has a scoop of nuts with some original hi-fi and endless hay he's out in the day and in at night as usual... I hate using calmers as I say but when he's becoming dangerous for others to handle I cannot risk it, it is against all I believe to use them for any reason and have never used them in the past but it is something I'm willing to try for the winter (I will never use it for competitions or in the summer because he's fine) especially when my grandad is doing me a favor getting him in I can't imagine how awful I would feel if he got hurt!!!

It is a right pain not being able to ride and the previous winters he's always seemed to welcome the break and goes all playful but never over stepping the mark!!! He does loves his work though and I think he does miss it when he's on holiday his eyes do light up when he sees the saddle!!!

Templars he's on the Magic power stuff that you give daily!?!?! Hopefully it will just take that edge off him and wont have to use it for long, I was very reluctant to try it but I can't risk him hurting my grandad... And I'm so sorry I haven't had time to reply to your pm, thanks for the great advice though and I REALLY appreciate it and the full detailed reply is on it's way I promise!!!

I'm sure you've thought of it, Jess, but did you cut his feed down when you stopped working him? Also, I'm not a fan of calmers, I think you're just masking the problem (unless, for example, your horse has to be in 24/7 as someone posted recently, with the horse cross-tied for veterinary purposes).

Hope you sort Tiger's problem (otherwise you'll have to call him "Tigger")!

Yes here also Kirstie is normally so laid back its unbelievable but today after she spent yeaterday out in new winter field she snorted and pranced out this morning and when we did some lunging I have never seen her so alert and forward going.

I think it may be catching, I had to give ollie a good loose lunge yesterday he has had 2 weeks off and he was so fresh even though he is out everyday all day, He was rearing and trying to play with the other horses but was so mad he was actually scaring them, So I am having to keep him doing something to keep him quiet. Xsara also hates it when she is not doing anything she is very grumpy if i give her a break so have to keep her going to keep her mind active. I hope he settles for you it is very hard when you have no paddock especially with the weather we get.

Maybe he just loves work!

We've found that all ours are different and whilst some enjoy a break, others really don't like it. Even though we think we're doing them a favour giving them a rest, they can go stir crazy. We found the best solution was to ease off on the work regime but not stop it all together.

What calmer are you giving? Try and get one that's added daily in powder form rather than a syringe that give a short, sharp blast.

Good luck with him :)

ps did you get the PM?
