Posted - 06 Nov 2010 : 8:39:41 PM Well since my last posting, I have been bitten twice, kicked...
It wasnt all his fault...well the bites were...but I was holig him and the ther colt was loose and trotted off to the water for a drink, Romeo wanted to join him so took off after him....I was ski'ing behind, I did manage to stop him him...eventually....much to his disgust, so he spun round to face me and reared up...as he came down he caught my thigh....OUCH!! It is truly black and blue!
Then yesterday every time he kept being stroppy and pulling faces and digging his heels in, I just used the keep him moving his feet philosophy...whether that be sideways, backwards forwards, and it seem to work, he allowed me to groom his whole front end and pick out his front feet........then today he was even better still!!! I groomed his whole body...except tail that would look great if I wanted dreadlocks.....and I managed to pick out three feet...one of his back he really doesn't want to pick up!! But I did feel we are getting somewhere. I was supposed to have the entries in for the national foal show but didn't want to push my luck, although progress has been good......lets hope tomorrow it isn't one step forward and two steps back!! He looks so cute as if butter wouldn't melt, its hard to believe he can be suck a little monkey!! But you just cant help but love him!! :-)

Posted - 07 Nov 2010 : 07:53:55 AM Hang in there. I think it is a normal leaving mum, stress from moving and trying out who is gonna be boss thing.
When you are used to handling older horses it can be quite a shock. Diva has done everything that you describe - apart from not being able to be caught. I had the huge black and blue bruises to prove it and resorted to handling her in full body armour
The surgery, pain and two months box rest didnt do much for her demeanour. So much so that we now affectionately refer to her as Deevil or "the evil one" She pull horrible faces when she is waiting for her feed.
With patience and perseverence though she is turning into a lovely young horse. They do grow out of it. It will all be worth it in the end with Romeo. Keep us posted and keep yourself safe.
