Now the light has gone for a few months and bleak weather is here what are you doing with your babies that have started this year, have a school at livery with flood lights but it's flooded |

I've turned Amber away until the spring, she was backed about 3 months ago and done some light work, but she does need lunging before being ridden and with no school and the fields being slippery I don't think it is worth her slipping and undoing all the good work so far, spring seems a long way off |

Gus was broken in July, i had him in light work for 3 months, and i think that is plenty for him just now so he's on his holidays. I'd be restricted to riding at the weekend only as our school isnt floodlit and i think babies benefit from having time to digest what they've learnt and grow up a bit more (mentally & physically)
I'll take him back into work next Feb - weather permitting! - and then concentrate on training. We have a clinic at the beginning of April, i'm hoping to get to some RC evening group training, and in mid May i'm at a week's 'boot camp'  |

We have turned our three year old away till xmas. He had done enough and started to grow again so thought the break would do him good.
He covered quite a few mares as well so needs a break
He will come in after xmas have a clip and get his arse into work ready to do the four year old dressage and event pony classes.

I'm also a member of the local riding club so go some of their training nights- last week I got a private lesson, indoors for £15!! You cannot beat that- there was meant to be someone else but she cancelled last minute so still had to pay her share.
We are so lucky in that I have an indoor school 10 mins away and a good few others 20-40 mins away- so lots of choice of things to go to, training during the week and comps at weekends.
Gets them used to travelling and doing things away from home. |

Light hacking (2 to 3 miles) or light schooling (20 minutes max) 3 times a week. My wee guy is only 5 years old, so no intentions of doing anything more strenuous till next year |

We don't have a school either. I try and hack early in the morning before work. I get to the yard in the dark and get him all groomed and tacked up, then go out as soon as it's light. I also borrow a friends school twice a week if I can and take him down in the trailer.
My problem now is getting two exercised... The young girl who helps me can't ride after school as it's dark so I have to ride both. I try and do them alternate days but this really isn't enough for the youngster and he gets quite lively... |

We hacked out a massive 4 times last week, like everyone making the best of the weather. But i am moving this weekend to a yard with an outdoor school - not lit. But i don't plan on doing much with him this winter - not totally turning away, just keep him ticking over with the odd weekend ride when kids/weather/domestic chores allows. I'll pick up the pace a little in the spring methinks! |

I don't have a school or electricity so it's weekend riding/work only for us now  Never mind, better than nothing and it takes the pressure off feeling you can do something and you're not!

we are going to tackle a fallen birch tree, blew his mind abit last Sunday i can understand trees are upright things not horizontal things, so we are getting a lead horse to show him how to tackle stepping over the trunk, bless him this could be the start of xc  |

Yup a bit of water training in the school- I also hacked Spangle out in the dark- safe riding tracks- she hadn't been sat on for 2 weeks and school was being repaired, anyway she was as good as gold- can you do some inhand work within the yard, clicker training or the likes- just some games to occupy his mind? |

Baz is looking great.
We're lucky that Bertie is so laid back hes virtually horizontal, but he really enjoyed himself last week.
Seems a long time til light nights again:(
Am hoping that Chelle will let me hack him out after Xmas to keep his mind occupied? |

Chelle backed Bertie this summer, & we had a good week last week hacking out every day because it was 1/2 term holidays, but he'll probably get turned away til after Xmas now :(
