Hi Folks. I need some advice on rugging Kessa. She is my 7 month old filly and would like to show her next year. The problem is that I am new to arab showing.
I don't know which shows I will enter her in but if they are early in the year how best do I rug her now, to have her coat right for spring ?
She goes out in the day and in at night, but is sometimes out for a few days at a time.
Do I put her in med rug now, then heavy as it gets colder ? Does she need a rug with a neck or does this damage the mane ? When she is in does she need a stable rug ?
Or do I just rug her as I see fit, then clip her out nearer the time ?
What do you experienced folk do ??? |

I would get her used to rugs anyway.
When show season is coming up I normally do a full clip and rug up. Lycra slicker hoods are great.
You need to feed her very well to get a good top on, train her and condition her. Its hard work wether your new or experienced but you will have great fun wherever you are placed.
Try watching a show or two before you take your filly, this will give you confidence then you can concentrate on your horse when its your turn.

Arabians are not native to the UK Purplecloud and therefore not obliged under the same rules. |

It is far from common practice to clip out ANY native breed under the age of 4, in fact it is NOT allowed. |

Its common practice in all breeds to clip out youngsters or adults for showing. No one wants to show a 'yak' and not everyones climate means they have moulted out beautifully for early shows. |

Let her set a bit of coat and rug well and feed well through the winter - she should moult once the temp goes up and nights get lighter. Oils help, as does some walks to raise the heart rate. Good coat comes from the inside so as long as you meet all her needs, worm er etc she will be fine  .
You can always add a neck or slicker on the run up tofirst show to make her look 'sharper' if you don't want to clip |

I am no expert when it comes to showing, but the earlier you rug the less of a winter coat they will grow - ie if you keep them warm before it gets cold the coat doesnt grow as thick, therefore it wont take too long to fall out next spring. Only thing is when it gets really cold in the depths of winter you may have to rug them up to the earholes to keep them warm as they wont have a full winter coat.
Personally I would rather let them get a nice warm winter coat and then clip before your show if still hairy.
