Posted - 02 Nov 2010 : 1:00:52 PM Well we have had some fantastic progress!!
Finally managed to get a headcollar on my boy, and this was without having to get him inot a stable so I am really pleased. And it was bizarre, putting the headcollar on was like flicking a switch, he turned into a very sweet and amicable little boy!!
I dont like leaving headcollars on as a rule, but I have done, so he is easier to catch and we can start his education twice daily he will be handled and led etc for short periods.
today he led around lovely, and let me pick his two front feet up, didnt flinch when i scratched his shoulders then lent over to scratch his furthest shoulder....I can believe the differance, and as you can probably tell I am on such a high!!!!! |

Posted - 02 Nov 2010 : 6:27:33 PM Thanks everyone!! I have ordered a leather one,but he does have a nylon weanling size one at the moment!
He was still a little shy tonight, but once we had hold of him he was fine, we brought him down to the stables (across 3 fields) and then put him in a stable where I spent twenty minutes scratching and rubbing....and picked out all four feet!! So even more proggress,. which is fantastic news I am so happy with the progress we have made in just one day! I know tomorrow it will be one step back again when we go to get him.....but slowly slwoly catch a monkey!

Posted - 02 Nov 2010 : 3:00:41 PM Well doneIf you need to leave a headcoller on in the field, put a leather one on it will snap if it is caught on anything, whereas a nylon one wont. Another tip I have found with putting headcollers on babies is rather than trying to flick the strap over the poll to put it on, which often frightens them, I do the top strap up and undo the throat bit and just slide up the nose and gently hook over the poll if they pull back its already on so they cant go anywhere. Arabi hated having the top strap flicked over his head and will often pull back now and his 6. |
