I had a really peculiar day on Saturday with Mush. He's been really hard work, anxious, stressed etc. for quite a while and we're kind of used to dealing with it. Last week was no exception. Then, all of a sudden, on Saturday he was really lovely, all quiet, stood still for grooming, no calling out, no panicking, coped with field mate being away for a ride, and he had lovely soft eyes.

Sunday we were back to 'normal' and today the same. No letup in his bad behviour. How come he can have one peculiarly good day so all of a sudden and then change back again. Nothing had changed, same diet, same routine, same field, same rug, same me, same everything.

It has me stumped. We were hoping that it was the new calmer that was starting to work, but it seems to have been just an 'odd' day. Of course we all have good and bad days but this is really extreme. Anyone with similar experiences?

Sorry he is still being difficult.
Who knows what goes on in their heads sometimes?

Oh I wish I could help.
One thought did occur ...some years ago my normally sane sensible horse turned peculiar overnight. He wouldn't calm down, wouldn't eat, stared into space in his field. He was upset by everything. It took some time for me to discover that a neighbour had moved his pigs closer to our yard. I would say it took quite a few days before we got back to normal and even then if the pigs were noisy some days the horse got upset.
I am not saying it is pigs but maybe there is something ongoing that you may be cannot hear, smell or see but that your horse can. It may have stopped temporarily on that Saturday.- and it could be some distance away.
Laddie can hear our hunt and hounds getting ready on winter mornings and gets really uptight yet they are quite a distance from our place.I only know they are about because I have their card!
I expect you have exhausted this type of theory already but thought I would mention it anyway.
Best wishes
Sandy

i dont know what he was like before you started the calmer but i have tried calmers in the past and they have actually seemed to have not suited the horse and made them worse...i would be tempted to stop the calmer and see how he reacts after its out of his system maybe think about trying a different calmer as an option? my friend gives her mare magnesium supplement and so far touch wood its having a positive effect....... sending you hugs and hoping things improve xxx

I have experienced this with a rehabilitation we done on a creulty case, for two years we had one step forward two step backwards so furstrating and often tears was shed. however after 2 years we had a changed horse and we started having more good days than bad days, so hopefully things will get easier and you have seen a glimpse of whats to come.

No - Shesky is a Toad everyday AND Pasha is a sweetheart everyday... in fact he is getting sweeter and sweeter and is enjoying being the older one that needs special cuddles just for being cute

On a serious note though I am glad you had a 'good' day and I hope you will have many more and they will get more frequent until the good days outweigh the not so good days

Give Mush a bit snuggle from me - I find if all else fails, a snuggle and a polo at the end of the day makes everything a little bit better xxx
