Posted - 29 Oct 2010 : 8:32:16 PM I haven't posted much on here for ages, partly because my youngest has had peritonitis again (since early August)
The vet now thinks that she probably has an abscess or other seat of infection in her gut somewhere - antibiotics aren't making a lot of difference (yet another blood test on Tuesday), she's been scoped (nothing) and had her abdomen scanned as much as possible (nothing). Depending on the result of Tuesday's test, the next option is looking like an op to try to locate said infection and remove it.
I know the practice is very experienced in colic ops and has a good success rate, and I have quotes for the price of surgery. I'd say I'm 90% sure I'll opt for the surgery as she can't stay on antibiotics and not get any better forever. But there's still that 10% of me that's not sure.
Has anyone on here had any experience of abdominal abscesses, and treatment? I should say Rash has had peritonitis before, 2 years ago, so it's probable that this is related to that episode. She recovered completely from that - or so we thought - but it sounds like there is something in her gut that is still causing problems.
Any advice/experience? I do know of two horses near me - much older than Rash - who had colic ops and survived with no problems at all, so I suppose I'm not so worried about the op as about the potential cause of the peritonitis.
I am going to have a chat with the vet again on Tuesday, of course, to find out more but he hasn't pushed me into surgery for Rash, he's giving me all the options available.

Posted - 30 Oct 2010 : 1:01:07 PM I had a youngster with a large internal abscess in her gut in front of her liver which was fully resolved with an antibiotic called Rifampicin - it's a human drug that's used for TB. It is apparently very successful at penetrating into the abscess rather than bouncing off it! It was expensive but not compared to surgery which was our other option. 3 years on and no further problems. Good luck, sounds like you've been having a really stressful time with her x
