Posted - 02 Oct 2010 : 9:22:13 PM I can't believe I'm on here again with another problem - after nearly losing Baraakah last year, Siraj's 'grass sickness' earlier this year -this time its my beautiful 5 month old SE colt Samawee.
At the beginning of the week, I thought he was a little off colour - just quieter than usual, and not scoffing as much of Mum's dinner as he normally would. Wednesday I had the vet out because he clearly wasn't right - quiet and not interested in bucket feed, but still grazing on and off, and to my horror he had a temp of 105. The vet took some blood, gave him some finadyne and antibiotics. I was to continue giving him them by injection. That evening his temp was down to 102 - a step in the right direction. Temp 102 again in the morning, but he got quieter and quieter as the day progressed, his temp back up to 105 by the evening - so out comes the vet again, administered more painkillers, doubled the antibiotics. By Friday, he was worse again - the vets are puzzled as the blood tests showed nothing conclusive. His breathing is loud as he inhales, but no cough or runny nose. My vet spoke to the Liphook (to a vet I used to work with funnily enough) and they decided to follow the route of Rhodococcus Equi. His symptoms are not typical - and Rhodococcus Equi is very rare in this country.
Yesterday he was suffering terribly with odema in his legs, he could barely walk, today it is a little better. Yesterday he was nibbling at some haylage - today he won't touch it, although he is still nursing from Mum, drinking water, and he has had his first couple of tiny mouthfuls of hard feed (fast fibre in his case) for several days. He is very depressed, but was standing more than yesterday, perhaps because his legs weren't so painful. He is very sleepy - but still alert to movement etc. This morning his temp had dropped - I left him for a couple of hours to see to the others and when I returned he was freezing and trembling - I double rugged him until he was warm again. Took his temperature which was up again so off came the rugs. I've just left him now - his temp was down again so I've put one rug on him, but he has just had liquid diahorrea (sp) (his droppings were just slightly loose earlier - nothing like this !!)
It is just so heartbreaking to watch this baby suffer - Sammy has the most beautiful, big black eyes (like a seal pups') and the sweetest, kindest temperament you could ever wish for (Samawee in Arabic means Angel) He is the best horse I've ever bred, all our hopes and dreams revolve around him, and aside from anything else, we absolutely love him to bits. I can't even think about the fact that the other foals could also be at risk.
He has been on the treatment for Rhodococcus for 30 hours now - I can't see any improvement yet, and the frustrating thing is nobody is sure if this is what he actually has I'm so so frightened I'm going to lose this precious, pure hearted boy, he just means the world to me, please please say a prayer for him, and if anyone has ever come across any symptoms like these before, please do PM me. Thankyou.

Posted - 31 Oct 2010 : 12:40:20 PM Well, Sammy is certainly back on form - thanks for all your good wishes
About a week ago he showed the first real signs of being back to his old self - plenty of bucking when he was turned out, and tentatively creeping up behind my daughter and taking hold of her coat, just looking at her with those oh so innocent eyes when she turned round !
He is now fully back to normal - picking up their water bucket and throwing it and the water all round the stable, turfing the bucket that hangs over the door off, kicking his feed bucket all round the stable (scattering feed everywhere).......at the moment I'm so delighted to see his normal cheekiness resumed, I'm not getting irritated (yet !) but his poor old Mum - don't know how she puts up with him, poor girl
He is clearly well enough to be bored witless, and missing all of his playmates, so he'll be joined by Chiya and her filly Zara soon (poor Zara - he's going to drive her mad !)
Its so wonderful to have him back, and I'm so thankful every day. I've taken some pics will hopefuly put them on later |

Posted - 09 Oct 2010 : 7:51:22 PM Well I'm over the moon to be able to say that Sammy has turned the corner, and is a little bit better each day . This morning when I called his name, his head appeared over the stable door, and to me it was just the most beautiful sight ever !
Its hard to believe that this time last week both the vet and I weren't sure if he was going to make it - I'm sure all your prayers had something to do with it
No one has any idea what was wrong with him (it obviously wasn't Rhodococcus, thank goodness)- obviously I'm watching the other babies closely, but so far so good.
I feel I've been very lucky again, even more so because I know there are many on here who are suffering losses right now, and my heart really does go out to them
Just wanted to say thankyou to all of you who have written on here or PM'd me, it is amazing how all the support helps and keeps you going - THANKYOU
I'll try to get some pics of Sammy tomorrow to show how he is doing - he has been a star patient, letting me take his temperature and syringe all manner of things into him, without even a headcollar or an assistant (ok at first he was too poorly to protest but as he's got stronger, he's remained as obliging and sweet as ever) I didn't call him Samawee (angel) for nothing !
Thankyou all again ! xxx |
