hi
I have been told by a judge that my yearling colt needs to put on more condition - but i do not fully understand what this means or entails.
i originally thought that condition meant weight, but he has been fed twice a day since May and the judge who originally saw him in May and then saw him again yesterday, said that he has put the weight on but he now needs the condition round his whither area.
How do you go about putting on 'condition' on this area?

You should be pleased. 
That is a really good result. If he moves well (judge obviously thought so) you already have an advantage. Sounds like you have nothing to worry about. I agree, my horses always start to look better as 2/ 3 yr old. |

he lives out 24/7 and is always running around the field, hence exercising all the time. he was poor after the winter, hence we have been feeding him twice a day since May, and its really starting to show now with the weight he has gained
i wasnt too sure what extra exercise i could give him, being that hes only a year old. we also tend to find that our horses come into their own when they are 2 years old +. the judge had originaly placed him 9th out of 11 in the youngstock class, but after seeing him move she then replaced him up to 3rd place - so we were chuffed enough that he had beat 2 and 3 yr olds |

I agree with Quarabian, time is most definitely what he needs.
If he is only a yearling then you can't really do any exercise with him. Just good grass and good feed and let him grow into a beautiful horse.
You will be amazed how different he looks in a year or two.  |

This might sound sceptical, but the judge was making an excuse why he didn't place your yearling above another. If he lacks condition (topline) then it is time he needs. it is late in the season to be pushing feed into him, so take it slowly. Better to keep his temperament sweet than force condition onto him quickly. Other aliners can advise better on what to feed. |

i think what they mean is the topline, which is muscle. Basically correct feed and a balanced exercise plan, consisting of prob alot of walking in hand. |
