10 weeks old 12 hands, (but bum high, so lower withers). Mum and dad are both 15h. Are Arabs tending to come out taller, given better diets, just like us people, each generation?
How tall will she be? I will update this with the answer in 7 years time and maybe in between once or twice, (assumes I shall still be alive in 7 years time, of course, says Mr Logic).
Are Arabs getting bigger? She is Russian x Crabbet if that helps. |

YIKES!!!! If I go from the dent in the knee down, Maverick is going to be 16.1hh! It's all a bit of fun I think. They will be what ever nature intended. |

Kazhak, I also use the "string test" that you mention, but have been told it only works from approx 18 months of age when the growing-plates calcify and the legs stop growing.
Qui Gon Jinn, I've heard that too (for babies <18 months) but I think I was told to go from the dent in the knee to the coronet?

That would make sense Barbara, as Neither set of Merlyn's Grandparents are huge, but Maverick's are all the 15.2hh mark! |

Don't just look at the parents, look at the grandparents and great grandparents. If they are all small then your horse may well be. If the parents are small but come from big stock the chances are that the foal will end up bigger than it's parents.

The other trick in measuring which seems to work well is to measure from just under the knee down to the top of the coronet band (where the hair line ends) and whatever you get in inches, is what you'll get in hands. Merlyn measures 15" and is just on the 15hh mark now at 5 years old. Maverick's measures 15.75" which I hope does not mean he'll make 15.3hh!!!  |

Hi why not take a piece of string & measure down the front leg from the elbow to the back of the fetlock, then turn the string around & extend it from the elbow up the body of your young one & the mark from the fetlock should be a general guide as to how tall your youngster will turn out to be..

Mirabelle, 15.1hh, has produced 4 foals for us...1st is 14.2hh (mare), 2nd is 15.3hh (stallion), 3rd is 14.2hh (mare) (all 3 have the same sire, who is 15hh) and 4th is a yearling now and almost as tall as Mirabelle (her canon bones are longer than her dam's), so will probably make 15.3! Sire of the 4th is Ferryt and I have no idea how tall he is.

You cant always go by the size of the parents as I know from experience, Charismma is 14.3 on a good day yet he has tall babies, one notable son Narismma being 16 hands !, Minuette was smallish 14.2/3 yet all her sons and daughters towered above her . |

Ali Bali, I have a half brother to your grey gelding (same mother). He is 14.1hh now and 14 months old! How tall did your boy grow? Misti (Black Bess) is only 14.21/2" so not exactly massive. The sire of my colt is 15hh, but has come from a line of tall arabs. I suspect that Maverick will make around 15.2hh.

Thanks ali bali, that is a useful thread. Clearly they don't all end up the same size as their parents, we have one who is 16h and one 15h, both from the same stallion, and neither mum is over 15h2.
We don't have anything less than 14h3 (except Saffee), but they all ride big, if you know what I mean. Saffee just seems exceptionally big for one so young, she is also considered the friendliest and nicest foal evet to be on the yard in the last 30 years by the owners, so a big plus for our Arabs.

For anyone interested he is now 3 years and 3 months and measuring 15.1 1/2 at the withers and 15.2 and a bit at the bum. He hasn't been level since I originally posted  The downhill look is not attractive! I keep telling him its time he stops growing, levels up and fills out but no sign as yet! He is about 86% Crabbet |

I have a yearling who is already taller than his Mum, she is only about 14.2 though!

I had a 16hh purebred - both parents were under 15hh, so don't know what happened there.
Then an Anglo that made 15hh. Mum was 15.2hh and Dad 16.2hh - again, not sure why he was smaller? |

surely if both parents are 15hh then she will be around the same height?
they say that the mum determines the height - but saying that we had a arab x mare who was 14.2h and she was put with a 15.2hh TB and the gelding son is now standing at 15.3hh at 6 years old! |
