Hi all, I've noticed on several Arab Stud websites where they say you can order a breeding of your choice from their horses, i.e. "let us breed your dream horse"! Has anyone on here done this? Why did you do it, was it to try & get your dream horse from bloodlines you admire, rare bloodlines etc?

Just curious really as to how you would draw up a contract, as we all know in breeding things can & do go wrong, what happens if the foal dies before weaning, or is born with severe conformational / health problems?

I agree it does sound a responsible attitude to breeding, if the mare is only put into foal if someone wants the progeny, as opposed to breeding on the assumption that there is a market for the resultant foal, particularly at the moment when a lot of people are finding it tough. Obviously there are always variables when breeding - you are not being offered a cloned foal. I suppose you would have to ensure that the new prospective owner wasn't going to insist on which sex the dream foal was supposed to be. I must admit I read the " dream foal" as marketing speak to a certain extent.

Hi Justine, i'm not sure what you are so worked up about, it is no more prostituting than putting a mare out on loan in fact the opposite at least the mare owner can control what is happening to their mare unlike the poor mares on another current thread. Also decades of select breeding does not always produce what is expected, any breeding can be pot luck, i have seen a donkey produced by 2 BNC's in fact i own one but what might be lacked in beauty in somes eyes may be perfection in others.

Justine, I can understand your point of view but what if, lets say a stud has cut down the numbers of foals they breed due to the bad market but are offering this service so that some of the foals they breed are only being bred as someone wants that combination of parents? I would say that in that scenario the stud is being responsible.

I realise as I said in my original posting that things can & do go wrong when breeding, hence the need for a good written contract, although maybe if you haven't got the facilities to breed a foal yourself, why not leave it to the professionals to look after the mare throughout pregnancy, foaling, halter breaking, handling the young foal & weaning etc?

Crazy!
The market is so bad this is what these studs have resorted too!
For god sake, dont people realise that just picking dam to sire and creating a new life does not make your ideal foal?
It takes decades of select breeding to even get near that foal.

For god sake just buy your ideal horse!

Sarcasm now - Im going to prostitute my mare to make your ideal baby from the stallion of your choice (one of ours of course)

My opinions only and dont mean to offend!

I can definitely see the benefits of doing this if you can use bloodlines you like allot & maybe don't have, or which are from abroad (the studs I saw advertising this were abroad), or have seen a good horse as a result of that breeding, which may-not be for sale.

Also there's the no sleepless night to endure like you said Kimzi! I am soo pleased your chosen breeding produced a foal that you are very pleased with Kimzi!

We have done this but instead of using one of the stud's stallions used our own, it is very cost effective, there was a properley drawn up contract, we got to use a mare that we feel is the perfect compliment to our stallion and have a wonderful 4 month old filly who is fit, healthy and everything we hoped for. Also we did not have to endure any sleepless nights , would definetly do it again in the future.

I have never done it but should I ever offer a mare for such a thing surely the contract would state live foal at weanling time. if the foal was born with a severe conformation og health problem it would be PTS as if it was mine to keep and should the foals owner want they could have a new go... same story if the foal should die before weaning time.
