Does anyone know anything about frog re-growth? How long it takes to re-harden when part had been removed (by vet)? Horsey went every so slightly lame - called the vet who thinks the frog has been sliced by a sharp stone/object and he had to cut a small section off - apparently the 'tender' part had been exposed and she's now on stable rest for a few weeks to keep it dry/clean until it recovers ... any advice? After a few days of being in what looked like 'infection' came out but the vet said this was normal, not to poultice and keep dry ... seems to be hardening (slowly) but it's now a whitish/cream colour .... this normal?

Abcoboy (I always read your name as "Alcoboy", sorry)!
Yes, he developed an infection; after I removed the metal the frog bled and I immediately tubbed and then poulticed his hoof (this was on a Saturday), re-did it again on Sunday when he was still sound but by Monday he was swollen to the hock and hopping lame, so the Vet came out....antibiotics/Bute etc and severe paring back of the frog which was repeated the following day.

but I only kept him in for 4 weeks (I rode around the roads in the fourth week, the only reason he wasn't turned out is that the ground was so wet, as it was March/April). The frog grew back really quickly.

Thanks again so much for your replies ... it is ivory but one part seems to be 'weeping' and gunk coming out (not now but a few days ago) so i suspected an abscess and poulticed ... rang vet and he didnt seem to think there was one (gunk only came out after 2 days the vet had been) ... she still is slightly uncomfortable when walking but only if you're looking - do you think there's more to come out or just because the frog is still tender ... will try and upload pic from this morning x

Aw thanks for the replies!!

Well the frog is ivory colour ... so fingers crossed she will be ok. She's not a happy bunny staying in - that's for sure! That half hr each day is well spent!

Sorry, didnt mean rock hard .... just meant layer to toughen up ...

Aw thanks Quarabian .... she's massive now though hehe ...

Surprised at that one Kate as Iodine and Sugar = sugardine solution which is a very effective drawing poultice. It's often used on resected laminitic feet. Meths is good for hardening skin, so I guess it would help frogs?
Freshly trimmed frog is usually ivory in colour and should toughen up fairly quickly. Hope all goes well

Don't know much about frogs except they are supposed to be soft and elastic. Are you sure you want them hard? I might be on the wrong track though. However I just want to mention your bunny on the sig pics. What a little stunner.

Had advice from new farrier this week re soft/thin soles - he recomends iodine and sugar solution, the iodine does the hardening up and the sugar helps it stick. I guess it might help the frog also....

No sorry, I was just making general 'frog' observations as noone else had replies and I thought they might help a bit! His seem to grow like mad though and I don't feed him any specific supplements for feet... although his balancer has biotin in it!

Have you thought about putting a boot on it to protect it so that she can go out?
abcoboy Posted - 17 Aug 2010 : 3:20:59 PM
Hoof is black … will try and get a pic tonight … he said it will take ages to re-grow and she’s only a tad sore due to ‘tender bits’ being exposed … he said she could go out if I can guarantee it will be clean/dry at all times (which is impossible) so she’s in with turnout whilst Im there to keep an eye on her!

Will dig around cupboards see what I can find in terms of supplements … sure Ive got some somewhere …

Did shesky have the same thing? x
Pasha Posted - 17 Aug 2010 : 3:10:15 PM
What colour are his hooves? Shesky's hooves are white and his frogs are white too after the Farrier has trimmed them (go black with dirt in between trims lol). They even look transluscent sometimes!

Not sure how long it will take your boys frogs to heal... but I doubt it will take long as Shesky's grow like wildfire and shred naturally (have big bits hanging off at the moment) and he is trimmed every 4-5 weels!

You could always feed him some biotin or a foot suppleement to help them re-grow?
