Posted - 14 Aug 2010 : 9:57:48 PM What are your opinions and/or experience of these, particularly the level 1 & 2 ones? Thanks. Have been using an MB04 comfort snaffle with low port for about 2 weeks now. No more chucking head up, opening his mouth, paddling with the front feet or tense jogging. Previously when I bridled him he would hold his little mouth closed with teeth almost clenched. Now he opens his mouth. That tells me a whole lot. No sore bits in the corner of his mouth or elsewhere & he isn't stopping to rub the sides of his face. I just have remember that it's action is more precise than a snaffle & so ask & reward much more promptly. I think we might even manage to work in a bit of a shape!(Maybe!!). |

Posted - 06 Sep 2010 : 4:58:41 PM Just changed my boy into a low port comfort snaffle and he and it are fantastic. He is now so much more consistent that in our lastest novice dressage comp. he scored 65% (we changed to plain comfort snaffle for the test). |

I know what you mean, Roger basically sticks his head in his bridle and opens his mouth! When I tried a vulcanite bit he just turned his head away after a couple of times - as you say, very conclusive and when Roger tells me something like that I listen!

Posted - 17 Aug 2010 : 10:51:09 AM I used a Myler on Merlyn to get him started and he didn't like it at all. It was a comfort snaffle without hooks and I though a lovely kind bit............he HATED it!! He refused to relax and stretch down, he constantly opened his mouth and evaded it and as others have said a lot of head tossing and upset behaviour.
I bought him a coppar loose ring snaffle with the peanut lozenge in the middle instead and he is a different horse now. He is trying hard to stay on the bit and never opens his mouth at all. By comparision my loan mare loved the myler, so you just never know!! |

Basically, all any kind of drop noseband does is FORCE your horse to keep its mouth shut, no matter how uncomfortable it is, so IMO are no use whatsoever.
Have had good results with Myler bits with my lot - they 'took them up' far more eagerly when first introduced.

Posted - 16 Aug 2010 : 2:48:45 PM I have just hired a Myler 4 1/2" Low Port Comfort Snaffle. My Section A Welsh pony is 12hh and has a small mouth with little room for a bit. I have spent hundreds on bits for him in the last 2 years and still cant find one hes comfortable in, he constantly opens his mouth and and bites the bit, gets his tongue over etc, it really upsets me! I am not seeing any improvement with the Myler and from the advice I was given by the bitting experts I was expecting quite a significant improvement! My pony has had consistent Dentistry by highly recommended Dentists. I have also tried a flash bridle - makes it even worse!
If anyone can advise me of a bitting expert that will come out to your horse or a miracle worker please let me know! |

They freak!!! It's not nice to be sitting on!! My mare went dotty half way round the block, violently shaking her head then bouncing all over the place, then took off!! Was not fun!! I had carefully introduced it to her as bit bank lady suggested and all was fine, she has worn a hackamore and so is used to nose pressure, but she didn't like the myler combination at all, now going in a waterford!

Posted - 16 Aug 2010 : 09:11:55 AM Thanks for all your info. How do the horses that don't like them react? How do you know that the horses do like them? Thanks again. |

Posted - 15 Aug 2010 : 8:45:21 PM One of mine loved it, the other preferred his original straight bar happy mouth, given the price I think hiring one is a good idea, then you can find out what your horse goes in best. |

Posted - 15 Aug 2010 : 8:35:02 PM Love them; I've got three. Fulmer snaffle with a copper roller in the middle, Pelham with a shallow port and a French link. I use the snaffle for hacking and schooling, the Pelham for showing and "Best", and the fulmer for lunging and/or long reining. Ryazan goes really well in them cos he's got a thick tongue in a narrow mouth. The slight poll pressure plus independent movement on each side of the bit and the copper in the mouthpieces give a soft contact and brakes when needed! |

Posted - 15 Aug 2010 : 12:28:23 PM My arab mare has a Myler loose ring snaffle and she loves it, i also have the eggbut snaffle and the high port with hooks which we used to event in. Hilary Vernon came out to us and fitted them , would be worth you hiring one to try it. |

Posted - 14 Aug 2010 : 10:21:06 PM I think they are fab. My mare doesnt like traditional straight bar or jointed snaffles but she settled straight away to a Level 2 Eggbut Myler. I had real problems trying to get her in an outline previously. The port seems to give more tongue room which my sensitive girl likes.
They are expensive but worth every penny IMO. Might be worth borrowing one or hiring one from the Myler bit bank if you are not sure. Good luck. |
