Following my post last year about manes being pleated it has happened AGAIN to my Arab mare but also this time to my other mare. Police and Horse Watch have been contacted. Police have informed me that there has been a few other reports in Fife of this happening including a horses tail being cut with torches being seen at night in field. My OH was up at the yard a couple of times the night after it happened and one of the times he seen torches in field..went to investigate but couldn't see anyone. We have poaching that goes on near our yard so could have been them with torches but you always have to be on the safe side.
Before anyone comes back and mentions that these could have been the whirls that horses often get in manes with the wind...they weren't. My arab mare often gets these with her long mane but these are different. And it happened before these strong winds hit us!!

Yup, people buying it. Cheaper alternative to beef. I'm afraid this takes off with the current penny pinching times.
Although my horses are marked and microchipped and I do have a sign saying so, I haven't put it up for fear it actually attracts attention to them. I also really have to question how effective either a freezemark or microchip is other than identifying them if found. But if they are being stolen and taken to an abattoir who asks no questions. So scary.

It sounds to me like so called pagan activity(sorry to genuine pagans) with the plaits and tail cut and such like. I know people near me in lincolnshire who have problems with them |

hi sorry to hear about your problem,we get that from time to time here in ireland men pull up at the gate and look over to see whos about etc so i know how you feel its not nice,but we have the advantage that we have five mediem sized dogs watching for us and any sign out they go. this is why in the uk the planning laws should be changed that if you want to purchase land for horse you should be able to live on the property or how else can we watch out for theives and wierdos etc!?. yes why not try putting a notice on the gate saying that the yard is undersurvalience? or maybe put a notice on the gate saying warning to others as theives are working in your area? i know it all a game of bluff but what can ya do?? these people are dangerious so you have to be carefull,many is the time i have sat up till 3/4 am if ive seen odd cars drivving up and down the road outside,its not a nice feeling attall! i have mine in the yard at night now with trip lights that they trigger off as they move about they have access to a building for there shelter but the dogs watch the lights get tripped off so thats a bonus,i did once go outside to check on something and heard feet running down the drive way on the gravel,very unnerving,well all the best and keep yourself safe and ur oh,it will worry me now tonight.also the yard owner shouldnt object to you taking measures to secure the place,as you and your oh are looking after hi property aswell!!! so mmmmmmmm????? plz keep u and urs safe |

in Midlothian, will spread the word, at our yard etc etc. poor you, the thought of someone taking your baby is awful. we had ALL our tack stolen from my last yard(probably about £ 10k worth) They were seen leaving in broad daylight,999 call to police with reg number of van. Police arrived FOUR AND A HALF HOURS LATER!!! Van was found in nearby well known travellers site......empty, of course. We got no insurance as barn door had only a Yale lock and not a 5 lever mortise lock. Moral of the story is CHECK YOUR INSURANCE DETAILS. I now keep my tack at home and have since moved yards as worried my horse might be next. |

Hi,
What an awful time it sounds like you're having. I'm based 'over the river' in East Lothian and have benn spreading the word.The other liveries attitude is that it's just cobs that they're after and have been really surprised that they've been after Arabs as well.

PC, would it be worthwhile putting up some posters in the area warning everyone about horse thieves? A few neon-coloured and laminated posters with a simple message for horse owners to be on the look-out for a horse with a small plait in its mane, might just deter the thieves, and make horse owners aware of the situation. |

It's so annoying cause my horses are so settled there and my wee Arab is such a nervous wee sole and moving her could set her back to square one but what else can I do. |

It sounds like your YO isnt cooperating at all does it!! I dont think you should Padlock the stable but putting a car infront of the gates isnt going to cause any problems if you leave the keys for your YO just *incase*.
I would be frantic aswell so I dont blame you for looking for somewhere else to keep your horse.

Well the padlocks are off the stable doors now. My other half was leaving the car parked right infront of the yard gate but now the owner is moaning about that to in case there is a fire!!! Can't do right for doing wrong. I can see their point yes but like said before, just trying to put people off coming. I know these horse theives come prepared to break through everything but they also need to be in and out of a yard very fast so the more stuff standing in their way the less likely they are to do it. |

Please don't padlock your stables, it would be dreadful if there was a fire. Also stable door bolts are not as strong as they look. the butterfly type bit that you put the padlock through is only pushed through the backplate of the bolt and can be smashed off with a hammer if hit hard enough. I know. We were recently raided and that is exactly what happened. While Burglar Bill will come tooled up to do this kind of thing, your rescuer in the event of fire may not be so well equipped.

What a worry for you, but it sounds like you are doing the right things to deter them. At the end of the day they are looking for a nice easy target and hopefully will move on elsewhere if your horses look like they are in the 'too hard' box.
Is there any way you could padlock the access gate to the yard rather than the stables so that in the event of a fire your horses could be let out?
Vehicle registration numbers and good descriptions of vehicles and/or people can be useful to help the police identify these people, though as someone has already said driving around with a horsebox/trailer at 1.30 in the morning has to raise a few question marks on its own.
Hopefully your gallant boyfriends overnight stays will have been enough to get rid of these b*%$£*ds for good. |

There is another yard behind us that is set back further into the countryside, I might try and get a place there. I am really annoyed at the yard owner though cause when my boyfriend has been at the yard he has parked infront of the gate so if anyone did come it would be impossible to get into the yard. They wanted us to hide the car and then hide somewhere so if anyone came we could catch them.....what if there was a gang of them and the police never arrived in time??? The horses would be gone. These people are professionals and can be in and out of a yard in no time. At the end of the day it's only been me and my boyfriend bothering to actually do something about this and try and drive these people away. If the yard owner is that bothered why doesn't he do it himself. I would love to catch these people but at the moment I'm just thinking of the easiest and quickest way to make these people not come back cause they know it'll be unsuccessful. Also I bought 4 padlocks and put 2 on each of my stables. He wants me to take them off cause of saftey hazard if there is a fire. I can see his point but for god sake I just want my horses safe. He might buy and sell his horses all the time cause he doesn't care but my horses are everything to me and I will do everything in my power to protect them. My little Arab has had a really bad life before coming to me and she is going to be with me for the rest of her days and no-one is going to take that away from me or her. Makes me so mad!!! |

Thank god your boyfriend staying at the yard with your horses!
Hopefully they have noticed the increased security and will leave your horses alone!

The trouble is this sort of crime will get more common , a butcher in Glasgow now sells horsemeat , an abatoir in Bristol pays £800 to £900 for horses..easy money for the ''paint your barn Sor'', ''tarmac your drive Sor'' brigade , SIT UP WITH A SHOTGUN IN YOUR HANDS ....

We had this happen in our village earlier in the year. Some horses, equipement and trailers were stolen. The police were great, we had an email warning system set up, also by mobiles. Went on for ages... police came up every time an incident was reported and spent a lot of time driving around at other times too
Make sure you communicate with others to keep the buggers at bay!

Just come back from yard now. My other half is about go back up there for the night again. I can't believe I forgot this but last week a trailer pulled up outside our yard with another car, I was behind them and then when I pulled in they drove off. Again could be innocent but it's all just adding up. Mayb my imagination running away with me cause of what has happened. I'm just so scared for my baby and something happening to her. |

I was in tears when I seen it. Yeah I meant plait (can never spell it correctly). They have been moved to the back field today. I notified the police about it and have warned other horse owners in the local area. Hopefully them seeing a car there last night has changed their mind and they won't come back. |

Oh no how awful for you, the horse box being there at 1.30 in the morning does sound dodgy, when you say a pleat in the mane is it a plait?, I have heard of thieves doing this to identify which horse they want picked up at a later date. would definitely ring the police and try to warn other yards in the area.

That is very dodgy.
Not meaning to scare you but i'd be thinking they put the pleat in your arabs mane and then sent the van up the following night to fetch him. The pleat being the obvious sign that that is the horse they need to take. I would move my horse to the back garden if that was me..!! Hope they get caught. x |
