Wednesday 30th June Kempton Park is a hosting a feature Premier Handicap for Arab racing and a fascinating field lines up. Preview below, and if I can be unprofessional for a moment I really hope Benny boy wins!!!!

The DIARD 0-90 Handicap over 6 Furlongs:
A wide open renewal of this decent sprint handicap with several in with a chance, including recent maiden sprint winners Ashwaaq and Zayin Barakaldo and all weather six furlong winner Hidalgo. However, the selection is HH Sheikh Hamdan’s smart filly Juhood, she won on only her second start last season when winning over this trip at Stratford (beating useful yardstick Takaamul) and holds an entry in the Group 1 Zaabeel Stakes so is presumably showing a lot of class at home and she is taken to score here on her seasonal debut. Major dangers come from Zayin Barakaldo who easily beat a decent field of maidens (Jaady 3rd) on only his second start at Wolverhampton over 7 furlongs and holds a Derby entry. Ashwaaq looked impressive scoring on her debut at Huntingdon over this trip (Jaady 2nd and Maghazi 3rd that day), she looks capable of holding her own. Whilst Hidalgo won a decent handicap over this trip at Wolverhampton (Ambrose held in 4th).

Many congratulations Paul and connections
you must be very proud of him (and you )

long may his succeses continue

interesting that the crabbet line has shone through especially the temperament also noted that my new boy who although is slightly higher in the crabbet % (95 ) goes back to Hanif through his sire Ibn Silver

Review:-

The 28th Dubai Day Anniversary Premier Handicap Stakes 0-90 over 6 Furlongs:
A thrilling finish to this renewal as Julie Green continues to ride the crest of a wave of victory and saddled her second winner in as many runs when Zayin Barakaldo (her only horse in training) annihilated a classy field of sprint handicappers by making them look very ordinary and winning on the bridle with two lengths to spare. Superbly ridden by Martin Smith this tall scopey gelding was settled in nicely behind as Noble Athlete set a strong pace with Hidalgo, Mutafani and Ashwaaq in contention, as they turned for home Smith made his move on Zayin Barakaldo (Khoutoubia x Barryh (Djelfor)) who galloped readily clear and won with ease and lengths to spare at the line. Speaking afterwards his delighted owner and trainer Julie Green said “ I was hopeful he would run well today, but he was so impressive and did it so easily, he’s so relaxed as well and Martin said he idled on the run in but still won well. On Monday he was on the beach cantering along with the greyhounds and today he wins a big race, he’s a star and will head straight for the Group 1 President of UAE Cup Derby at Ascot”. Back in second was an excellent run from Hidalgo (Samern x Pella De La Coste) in arguably his toughest race yet, he travelled well and quickened nicely in the final furlong and although he had no chance with the winner he was safely holding the field. Whilst the Royal Cavalry of Oman continued their fine run of form with Mutafani (Amer x Cheikha) running a bold race in third, he galloped on well in the closing stages and put himself right into contention for this years Group 1 Zaabeel Stakes (which he was 2nd in 2008).

For those pedigree experts out there you may be interested to know that Barakaldo's dam Barryh is out a Crabbet mare called Manisa (Ravlon Elijah x Maysuna (by Haroun a son of Hanif)), so he is 25 % Crabbet whcih is probably why he is so sweet natured (and always was even as a foal, about the only one who never threw a tantrum). The grand dam Manisa was bred by Jane Kadri's Al Waha Stud!

Hi Karen and All,

Yes I am absolutely thrilled with Zayin Barakaldo (Benny) win, gives us all hope we can compete in the bigger races against the larger yards. So proud of Benny, he was the pick of the 2006 crop (see pic at foot of my history page) and always such a charming individual, sold him as a weanling and saw him for the first time when he hacked up at Wolverhampton. Evidently he won easily again at Kempton Park by 1 1/2 lengths from Hidalgo with the Royal Cavalry of Oman's Mutafani (A Group 3 winner in UAE and 2nd in the Group 1 Zaabeel Stakes in 2008)back in third. Next stop the Group 1 President of UAE Cup Derby at Ascot and I daren't even dream he could win that and to be fair winning sprints on the all weather to racing over 1 mile 2 furlongs on the turf in a Group 1 against Europe's finest will be a very different challenge, but he's certainly talented and could he be that special? Its what racing dreams are all about!

Adam - Maghazi is a colt and yes he is much better off at the weights although I felt he was tapped for toe at Huntingdon and also not sure weight makes much difference in maiden races. Also Maghazi is full brother to Moshahed who won over 1 Mile 2 furlongs and was placed once, and half brother to Yaqoot who also won over 1 Mile 2 furlongs, and Chndaka the sire is better known for producing middle distance horses generally (except America where they win from 5-10 f). I personally believe Maghazi will be better over these trips as well.

Well done to trainer Bev Deutrom and owner Julie Kelway for Hidalgo's 2nd to Benny.

Paul

Hi Paul if I were to make a selection I think Maghazi will be much closer as she has a huge pull in the weights working out nearly 20lb better off than Ashwaaq than last time they met and only five lengths to find, her low weight should tell against most of the field, but the draw will play a huge part over the sprint trip.

This race is on at 5.50 tomorrow and I think will be shown on the racing UK channel. You may be able to watch it on line afterwards.

Good luck to Julie Green with Zayin Barakaldo and also my trainer Bev Deutrom with Harry and Maghazi.
