Hi

Just wondered if anyone had had problems with an allergic reaction to either devils claw or rambo fly buster rug with the fly repellent on the rug? Sonny has a rash on his chest and has lost his hair too. It is a patch the size approx of a football on his chest. There is no swelling but it feels quite warm to touch. I have stopped him having the devils claw and wearing the fly rug (approx 2 weeks ago). The rash now seems to be getting better but obviously will have to wait for hair to grow back. These are the only 2 things I can think of as he started with both at the same time and was ok before.

Arabi has a skin reaction to most fly sprays, his hair doesn't fall out but his skin flakes off on the areas its sprayed, the same thing happened when I used Radiol B rub for a muscle injury

I would agree with Roseanne when she says the chest would be the most rubbed area from the rug hence the reaction.

Hope his hair grows back soon.

Not sure if this may explain it, but on the Derby House site it explains that some of the Rambo fly rugs are permiated with permethryn (or something) to deter flies, and it's obviously quite heavily soaked in the stuff as it is effective for up to 25 washes!

I wonder if that's why your horse has a reaction? The chest would be the place where it would press most firmly against his skin.

Hi Philippa

Sorry I havent got back to you before. I will give you a ring tomorrrow if you are around. I wont be able to make it to see Joe this week I dont think. If you see him could you let him know please? If I can go, it will probably be on Friday but I wont promise. Looking forward to hearing your news. I have some more news that is not so good but will tell you tomorrow.

Oh Louise, am really sorry to hear this. I thought he was somewhat better - Sue told me you went riding with Alison the other weekend, so I thought he must be on the mend!!
Keep meaning to ring you for a catch up, haven't seen you for so long. Hope you and Alison are well.
Talk soon

Love
Philippa xx

p.s. got something exciting to tell you!!

Thank you for your replies. I have washed the rug and am still not giving the devils claw. He is still bald on his chest! I am disappointed not to be giving him the Devils Claw anymore as it really helped with his lameness due to arthritis and ligament damage. He is now quite lame and have the vet coming out tomorrow to xray/scan him. I am really fed up and I'm sure Sonny is too

We had a stallion who had a reaction to a Rambo.

We found that he reacted to any new rug until we washed it.

He can out in an all over nettle type rash and then his hair feel out!

We also had a clients horse who reacted to a body wash and he went completely bald not a hair on his body. He spent 6 weeks having cream rubbed all over him, aloe Vera in his feed and masses of steroids.

When his coat did grow back it was darker than before and he had lovely big oil marks all over him.

I would put the rug in the washer!

As far as I know, Devils claw has unconfirmed side effect of potentially increasing the effects of a heart murmer pre-condition.

One of ours have a rambo fly rug but to no noticeable illeffect or allergy to it...?

One thing I have noticed this season is that more flies and midges do congregate on the horses' chests especially between the front legs and biting them there. The condition seems to be controlled by applying Anthisan cream and spraying additional fly spray on the undercarriage area.

I have never seen an allergic reaction to either of these things. Im sorry Sonny got his rash and hope his hair grows back quickly.
Am interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar problem with either product
