I don't really know what to do next though. Do you do the join up and then that's it or is there other stuff to do after it? Do you keep having to do the join up every day for so many days etc? |

Posted - 17 Jun 2010 : 3:53:16 PM Hi Claire,
Well done for achieving 'Join-Up'(c) with your mare.
This basically opens a channel of communication and trust between you and your mare. This is where you establish your level playing field for her education.
Personally I'd do the sessions a couple of times more to establish this trust, otherwise too much of it may cause problems further down the line... (ie when you wish to loose lunge, she'll turn-in when she's had enough... she'll be training you!)
Next step, you could work on some follow-up, perhaps doing a bit of halter work (prep for in-hand showing?...) Address any handling issues (ie not standing still for the farrier, loading into horse box etc...) Even to putting a saddle on her, long lining and riding away... the sky's the limit!
Do it at your own pace and set an achievable goal for each session... The agenda is yours! As Monty would say...'You chair the meeting!'
Consistency is the key, be wary of your body language, actions and your line of sight when you're around her (might mistakenly tell her off?!)?
Build and shape her behaviour whatever way you want, always with praise, comfort and trust. Praise the good and ignore the bad.
Welcome to the language of 'Equus'!
