Well some of you may have read my topics in the past about my first horse Sophie not standing still to mount. We finally got her standing although she did still shoot off when bum hit saddle. Because I orignally wanted a horse I could jump etc but ended up getting my gorgeous Arab Sophie who only really hacks and does school but hates it, she has started going over poles and small jumps but most of the time she's to spooky I decided to get myself a second horse called Jay who is a Connemara x. She is an amazing jumper but she won't stand to let me on either. You have to get on her outside the school and have to get a leg up which means I can only ride her at weekends as no-one else up at yard betime I finish work. But now you can't even get near her for leg up without her rearing up and spinning round. Well Sophie has now gone back to not standing when I try and mount so I now have 2 horses that I can't bloody ride!!!! Sophie has bad trust issues and Jay had really bad back problems but her old owner kept riding her anyway so she associates being ridden with soreness, although once you are on her she is good but she won't let you on and practically takes a chunk out of you when do girth up. You can do the girth up fine though once on her. Any suggestions on what to do with Jay? Sophie will be fine in the end, I just need to go back to what I started with with her. |

If you google Carolyn Resnick she has a wonderful way for you to gain trust on the ground which will then help you when you're riding :) |

I had a youngster who was very scared of people getting up and towering above him.
I was advised to give him his food on a hook bucket on the gate, and then sit on the gate, above him, talking and singing to him and scratching his withers, touching his back etc so he got used to having someone up there communicating with him.
It certainly helped a lot.
I do join up with all my youngsters. If you don't know how to do it, or what signs you should be seeing, it would be best if you don't just try it on this horse. It isn't particularly difficult but people have very odd ways of seeing the join-up process. I have one acquaintance who chases hers around the field. See if you can get someone to come and do it for you as it works for the horse no matter which person actually does the join-up with them. Where do you live? |

If her saddle and back are OK, how about if you lunged her for a while to try and calm her, then just approach her as if to mount, but don't, keep approaching her as if you are about to mount and taking it a little further each time, but if she tenses go back to what she is OK with and start again, I think the main thing is not to put any pressure on her or let her get wound up, hope you can get it sorted |

No they have seperate saddles. I am about to get a new saddle for Jay so going to get her measured properly.
I will defo need to try the join up. What do you do again for that xsara? |

Have you had your saddle checked? Would she still be this bad if you were legged up bare back? A similar thing happened to a friend of mine and it was the saddle causing the trouble. Are you using the same saddle for both? Seems odd they are both at it. |

Have you tried doing join up with her and do some ground work to build her trust. We had a horse and mounting was a problem we used to get someone to hold her you put weight in the saddle and she used to go of bucking and bronco down the yard then she would just stop and she would be fine. Well this progressed till she was rearing spinning ect and we worked out what was happening when we put weight in saddle the saddle pinched her withers but it sat fine when we werent on her so off and got her a new saddle but she still wouldn't stand to mount. One day i took her out and she wouldn't let me mount no one else about so i decided to tie up the reins and sent her away did a bit of join up and she was brill it really worked and she followed me even into a corner she was scared to go in little nervous. I got on she never moved an inch let me mount her and stood happily till i asked her to move from that day she was a different horse even with a year off i tacked her up one day jumped straight on her and she rode as if she never had missed a day. She was only five and went as a broodmare as she took ringbone in the joint so was never to be sound |

Sophie we can't get people to hold when mounting as this makes her worse. As she was beating up in one home and starved in another it just needs one on one with her. My instructor is coming up on Wednesday to have a look at Jay and see what things we can through. I am going up yard later so I might tack her up again and just get her to stand at mounting block and then put her back in stable (depending on weather as chucking it down at my bit the now). |

they are doing this for a reason , not just being bloody minded , so yes get them checked out, and then start from scratch , make sure you are mounting with out poking in the ribs ( which I am sure you are not) , start by getting someone to hold whilst you mount , when you are up praise and reward ( no harm in giving a treat at this stage ) then dismount , do this each time Praise and reward until they get used to the procedure ,( show them mounting can be rewarding for themso they have no need to shoot off) good luck  |

I'm going to get the back guy up ASAP to make sure all ok, she jumps out field to get to her friends so can't be that bad if is her back. I need to try some different things with her cause she's highly strung anyway the longer you leave her without riding the more she plays up when ride her. Because mounting blocks etc weren't working with Sophie my instructor suggested keeping reins really short, putting foot in stirrup and taking it out and patting her if she never moved, then progessed up to leaning over etc. If she did move then we gave a tug on the outside rein. We tried this with Jay and she went mental. |

get a physio to look at her incase her backs still sore. we used to have the same problem with a mare we had in, and as suggested before loads of patientce. Even when the mare was broke i took a year before you can do anything in the saddle really, as when your foot touched her bum or your hand she would have went spare and we jsut kept doing things slowly and desensitised her. even though no one is up you can still bring in and tack up and just stand on a mounting block beside her and lean over the saddle ect. The mare we had in used to cow kick at you, and bite lumps out of anyone near her when we were trying to get on. and now she doesn't move at all, not being held and mounting from the ground. so just do the same with jay what was suggested for sophie. |
