Has any one any experience of this in horses. My vet tells me they don't have them. Dogs and women, yes, mares no. However, looking on tracing horses, topic 'has my mare had foals' some one, think it was zapphire talks about mares having them. Any one got any experience or heard of this happening.

many thanks to all for your replies. have to say, bit concerned now. bought mare in foal. she ran with stallion all last summer so dont have an expected date, however she looks ready to foal and has done for couple of weeks. reasonable bag but not huge, (my TB mare has a cows udder when due) previous owner says she doesn't bag much prior to foaling but how much is not much i wonder. she is well and happy in every way and has had 4 foals previously. guess just continue with the waiting game and hope its a real pregnancy. daughter suffering from sleep depravation now though with getting up regularly to check her on the camera. ahhh the joys of breeding horses.

I can ditto what carole ferguson has said as we had almost identical behavior with an older mare who had visited the stallion, been scanned at 18 days and was twinning, had one pinched out and was scanned again at 42 days and confirmed in foal. She went to her due date looking to everyone (vet included) as though she was in foal, went one month over her due date when the vet examined her and announced her not to be in foal ! He also said mares did not have phantoms ! She did the same thing the next year but we had her checked before her due date and again, not in foal. So she is now a beautiful field ornament and has not had a foal for us, such a shame.

My old mare came into milk when her daughter foaled. The dear old girl must have thought she ought to feed it! She, too, had mastitis and was quite ill for a few days. It was a bank holiday Sunday. How do they manage to make the vet's bill as high as possible so often?

My first mare had two phantom pregnancies. The vet thought she probably conceived - then absorbed the foetus - but her body carried on thinking she was pregnant. She would not come into season - would certainly look in foal - run milk - and even roll about as if foaling - then a few days after this she would carry on as normal.
She never actually had a foal which was rather sad.

My old mare had phantom pregnancies from the age of about 16. Do be carefull if you have a mare that does this as the first time my girl had severe mastitis and was very ill. If your mare is bagged up keep her udder Very clean with a disinfectant cleaner. If you take off any milk even more can be produced and if you don't there is more risk of infection with the milk just sitting there.

After moving my new vets kept telling me mares dont have phantom pregnancies I must be mistaken as she couldn't be producing milk. when she had to be put down at 26 years (having been bagged up almost constantly for the past 3 years which was apparently imposible)the vet was amazed at all the milk squirting out of her!!!!!

Just because your vet hasn't encountered it before doesn't mean it can't happen

Two years ago my mare had a phantom pregnancy. She grew, bagged up woith milk and sloped off behind. The vet was even convinced she was in foal. One day she seemed to go into labour and then everything began to disappear. Both vets who saw her checked with another vet who specialised in stud work and it was confiormed that mares do have these.
