Hi all, what height would you say an Arab yearling should be to reach say 15hh at maturity? Just curious really if there are any figures, or rules of thumb for this?

I also think its a big bit of guess work. When showing riding pony youngsters, the rule of thumb is:-
and bearing in mind they are measured at the spring & summer shows and a lot depends on how they were fed over the first winter, the breeding ( might be pony native breeds, Polo Pony TB's,British Arabs (smaller), when they were weaned, those that stay on the mare usually do most of their growing early. and the Arab can develope more wither later and so add a little on at 6 or 7y.

12.3h ( and under) as a Yearling will be expected to make 13.2h.
13.3h - 14.2h
14.3h - 15.2h
15.3h - 16.2h
Keep an open mind.

One horse ( and Arab or Anglo) I remember who was only 15hh himself, covered all the riding school mares of all breeds and sizes, leaving several horses much bigger than himself, up to 16.2hh. and a few went on to win in top competition - three day eventing.

Cheers Sue

Ozzy my boy (Shafeeq os ) is a big boy, as a yearling he was 14.1 now coming up 3 1/2 yrs he measures 15.3 plus, just under 16hh mark..
Last couple years weve gone through rugs for England with him shooting up..
He has gone from a pony size headcoller/bridle to full size !!
Came to me in 5.3 Amigo rug now he wears 6.6.. have to say he,s all in proportion as well..
Many will love him but sadly plenty am sure will dislike such a large pure bred arab !!
I was desperate for him to make 15.1 15.2 he,s most definatlymade that plus lol.. !!

Thanks for the link oliva! Also very interesting BabsR re big surrogate parents, increasing the maturity height! Imagine seeing super huge purebreds, I wonder what the world record is for the tallest purebred?

My girls look set to reach the 15hh mark, going by the figures given, which I'm pleased about!
Kharidian Posted - 04 Jun 2010 : 5:11:13 PM
I do use the "string test" as mentioned by oliviaw but I don't think it is accurate until 18 months of age as, until then, the growing plates in the legs haven't calcified (or whatever they do!) and the legs are still growing.

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong!

Maybe i should pop down to the garden centre this weekend and get him a couple of grow bags to stand in..

Yes Mrs DJ, sorry to be so formal but I own Zinjadi who currently stands just over 16hh and did not stop growing until 6-7 years. He seemed to stop when I broke him and then went again later. He was around 15hh as a yearly though. I believe his sire was only under 14.2hh and the mare quite small also.

Very interesting link Olivia and thanks for that. The info appears to confirm much of that which I have stated regarding mature heights

Also, interesting to note that enhanced height can be brought about by embryonic transfer of Arabian into much larger mare uterus, with the resulting foal maturing much bigger, from the surrogate uterus. Does this mean, we may be seeing 16.2hh pure Arabians, being bred specifically for Dressage etc etc in the next few decades

Not sure the size of the parents is anything to go by, not that I know much about it.

My mare is 14.3, but (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) I think her full brother Zinjadi stands over 16hh.

She may have been a first foal though, as BabsR says they can be smaller than their full siblings.

Must research that one!!

Edited to add. Have just checked Allbreeds. She was not a first foal - she has an older sister Zahlina, who is 15hh.

This websites quite good! http://ctarabians.com/How_tall_will_my_arabian_foal_grow.html
I'm not sure how accurate it is though! My yearling has really long legs and I'm sure that must come into it aswell! There's always string testing aswell!

There are always exceptions to the rules, but generalising and in my four decades of breeding, a filly as a yearling (12 months) will gain approx 3-4" in height by maturity. I would be very surprised to see a yearling measuring at 13.1hh, maturing much above 14.2hh maximum

Colts/geldings tend not to reach full height until 5/6years i.e. measuring 14.1hh as yearling, probably mature at 15.2/15.3hh when fully grown.

Horses/ponies reach 80% of their mature height by the time they are 12/15 months old. Often one sees a 2 year old advertised as 14.2hh
"to make 16.2hh".......I dont think so!! This is rarely the case but there will very occasionally, be an exception

When one sees Pure Arab foals and yearlings, they always look likely to make bigger than one would expect and yet appear not to have grown much bigger by the time they are fully grown

Also in my experience, a Mare`s first foal can sometimes mature smaller than anticipated, a full blood sibling often maturing a hand taller than the first born

Rug sizes really cannot be relied on as to the possible mature height of a horse/pony...much depends on the maker of the rug and also the conformation of the animal. A horse/pony with a long back, will often need a size bigger than one of compact conformation, even though each were the same age

Chips was 14.0hh at about 10 or 11 months (can't remember when I measured him) and is in a 5'3" rug. He's just a year now so I'll try to measure him again tomorrow. Oh yes, he's expected to make 15.1hh-15.2hh.

Thanks guys, I'm going to go & measure my yearling filly, in theory she should make over 15hh, as her dam is 15.1hh(ish) & her sire 15.2hh but like you said justine you can get throw backs, as another of my mares parents were 15.1hh & 15hh & she's only about 14.1hh!

garnet Posted - 03 Jun 2010 : 6:27:01 PM
According to my table a yearling to make 15hh should be 146cm (14.1 1/2hh) before 1st July and 147cm (14.1 7/8hh) after 1st July. This is not Arab-specific but used in youngstock classes such as hack or riding horse where horse has to make a particular height at maturity and may be measured before the class, but should give you a fair idea.
justine Posted - 03 Jun 2010 : 5:30:17 PM
NO real rules. An arabian can be 14hh or 16hh.
Depends on the breeding. Most of mine are 14.1 to 15.1.
I expect sire 15.1 to a 14.1 mare to breed in between but this we cannot ever tell. They can throw back genarations!
The yearling size nomally gives a clue. Ponyish or leggy.
A 13.1 Yearling may grow or not!
oliviaw Posted - 03 Jun 2010 : 4:29:51 PM
Hello, my yearling is about 13.2 on her bum and about 13hh at the withers and shes expected to be about 15hh. Her mum and dad where around the 15/15.1 mark.

Not sure about this, but my yearling should make at last 15hh if not more and he is 13.1hh at the moment. He won't be a year old until 25th of this month.
