Posted - 17 Jun 2010 : 6:19:49 PM I agree with you Paul Menwaal was very impressive and the time of his race was only 1 second slower than the 0 - 65 which was a furlong shorter, by far the best fractions of the day so already competing at group pace!. The first three in that race will be nice to have a bet on in handicaps when they next run.

Posted - 15 Jun 2010 : 9:06:55 PM Thanks for the review Paul and well done everyone.
Many congratulations to you Paul as the Breeder of Zayin Barakaldo and of course to Julie as his owner/trainer. Taking on "the big boys" in a maiden and winning on only his second run is no mean feat and achieved by few. A day to be proud of and here's to many more.

Wolverhampton 12th June
1st race – The Come Racing with ARO OPEN (TBs & AAs) Handicap over 1 Mile: An impressive victory from Yankey here for owner/trainer/jockey Sarah Bowen, he was always looking like he was cruising and as they entered the final furlong he set sail for home down the centre of the track with Global Achiever and Megabond in vain pursuit, and galloped clear for comfortable four length victory. Global Achiever ran well back in second and he rallied hard in the final stages and although holding Megabond’s challenge never looked like scoring. Megabond found his stamina stretched by this trip but ran a very game race under top weight and was in turn clear of the field.
2nd race – The Royal Cavalry of Oman Maiden Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: The field went a crawl for the first five furlongs with Aakbe, Maghazi and Razen all leading the way, before the temp increased along the back straight and Kevin Locking drove Maghazi into the lead with the rest of the field chasing in behind with Hajes, Menwaal, No Frylls all in contention. As they rounded the home bend Maghazi was being hard driven but staying on determinedly, but HH Sheikh Hamdan’s impressive colt Menwaal (Chndaka x Synaps) was soon driven into the lead by a determined Phil Collington and as they hit the final half furlong he pulled clear for an impressive 3 ½ length victory for the Gill Duffield stable and is one to note for the Derby. Back in second was an excellent run from the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s smart gelding Hajes (Vertigo x Al Muhabah) who was running on well in the final furlong and battled on hard to hold onto second. Whilst Maghazi (Chndaka x Nirva De Cardonne) ran another promising race a length and a quarter back in third, he stayed on strongly in the final furlong and was in turn clear of No Frylls.
3rd race – The Royal Cavalry of Oman Maiden Stakes (3 & 4 yr olds) over 7 Furlongs: A shock winner here, but the market was buzzing as Zayin Barakaldo (Khoutoubia x Barryh (Djelfor)) was backed down from 12/1 to 7/2, this handsome gelding was taking on some useful blue blooded colts but he never looked in danger under a confident ride from Rob Woollard to score a bloodless victory on only his second start for owner/trainer Julie Green. The field set off at a decent clip as Takaamul and Zayin Barakaldo took each other on gradually winding up the pace along the back straight, as they entered the straight Takaamul was all out on the rail but Zayin Barakaldo looked to be travelling with ease and pulled clear to win by an easy length at the line. Delighted trainer Julie Green said afterwards “I thought he would run a big race here, and he won that very well, its my first win Arab racing after a 20 year break, and to be honest I am more used to training greyhounds than horses but the same principle seems to have worked”. Back in second was a gallant Takaamul (Djebbel x Valina Des Fabries) who always seems to find one too good, he ran his heart out here and was very game in defeat, his turn is near. Whilst the 5/4 favourite Jaady (Prince D’Orient x Alharir) was another five lengths back in third and seemed to struggle with the break neck pace that the first two set, he ran on well in the closing stages but had no chance with the first two.
4th race – The Royal Cavalry of Oman 0-80 Handicap Stakes over 6 Furlongs: They went a fair clip in this sprint handicap with Hidalgo, Whisper, Ambrose and Wathiq all showing early speed, as they entered the home straight it was Hidalgo in the centre of the track being chased in his slip stream by Wathiq and the tough mare Whisper flat out on the rails. Inside the final half furlong it was Hidalgo who just had the initiative under a strong and determined ride from Steve Harrison with Wathiq battling on hard on his inside, but in the end Hidalgo (Samern x Pella De La Coste) pulled ahead in the shadow of the post to win by ¾ of a length for owner Julie Kelway. Speaking afterwards winning trainer Beverley Deutrom said “He has won first time out 3 yrs in a row now and clearly goes well fresh, I thought he would do well today as he has been working well at home.” Wathiq (Nenuphar Al Maury x Tawam) ran another blinding race in second for the Royal Cavalry of Oman, he was hard pushed in the final furlong and was relentless in his quest for victory but couldn’t quite get passed the winner, his chance looks close. Whilst Whisper (The Wiking x Sucha) ran another very game race, she wasn’t far off the first two and rallied hard inside the final furlong but was always being held; but was in turn clear of Ambrose who is now looking disappointing.
5th race – The North Shropshire Anglo Arab Stakes over 1 Mile: A rare dedicated Anglo race and a small but competitive field went to post. Dancing Grace (Dancing Spree x Hardtoboss) was sent off the warm favourite and recorded another emphatic victory to add to her considerable tally of wins, she galloped readily under a fine ride from Ceri Evans clear inside the final furlong to win as she liked for owner/trainer Jenny Peyton. Back in second was older uncle Hardtoback (Norton Challenger x Harem VII) who was all out chasing the winner but was never nearer, he ran on well though to hold off a one paced Risky Jack (Call Me Risky x Maraday Kittyhawk) who seemed to struggle to stay the trip but looks to be improving gradually.
6th race – The Athbah Stud (Qualifier) 0-65 Handicap Stakes over 1 Mile 1 Furlong: A competitive handicap with 9 decent horses going to post and they didn’t hang around as they went off at a decent pace with Millenium Leap, Hayleys Comet and El Hamsa all prominent. As they approached the final furlong it was Wikkara and Jamaahir who were head to head duelling for victory, and these two brave geldings fought like lions to the line with Tom Garner under a fine ride on Wikkara (The Wiking x Akara De Syrah) just got the upper hand in the closing stride to land victory by a neck from an unlucky Jamaahir and Simon Walker. Wikkara was scoring the second win of the season for in form trainer Adam Newey, whilst his delighted owner Linda Cross said afterwards “He’s a fantastic horse and that will have done his confidence the world of good”. Jamaahir (Makzan x Tikis Tiffany) lost nothing in defeat and should be winning soon. However, the revelation of the race was the plucky mare Star Valentina (Div x Pronika), who showed a devastating turn of foot inside the final furlong and shot down the centre of the track and would undoubtedly have won in another couple of strides, in the end finishing a neck off Jamaahir; she is one to note for next time.
7th race – The Staffordshire Conditions Stakes over 1 Mile: Another shock result here as odds on favourite and French Group 1 Breeders Cup performer Al Charif ran no sort of race. The field set off at a marching gallop with the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Kerbelle Lotoise setting a moderate pace with Tidarbret and the rest of the field settled in nicely behind, as they turned for the home the pace increased and Steve Harrison seized the initiative on Tidarbret (Bengali D’Albret x Iktidar (Djelfor)) and this handsome grey entire galloped into a good lead turning into the home straight, but Thimaar was flying in behind and drew upsides in the final half furlong and these two beautifully bred horses were nip and tuck all the way to the line with the Middleton Stud’s Tidarbret just holding onto his lead by head at the line for trainer Dennis Batteate; and in doing so giving an on fire Steve Harrison his second win of the meeting. Thimaar (Chndaka x Alharir) is an extremely classy mare and ran an absolute blinder running so close to the rapidly improving winner. Whilst back in third was Mi Temps De Piboul (Al Sakbe x Manie De Piboul) who was only beaten ¾ of a length, she rallied hard inside the final furlongs and was gaining with every stride at the line and will be interesting when upped to 10 furlongs.
8th race – The Racing for Change Handicap Stakes 0-45 over 2 Miles: Anganate Safinat made the running in this stayers handicap with Tom Brady and Lile D’Amour close in contention throughout, they quickened the pace in the back straight it was Dakaran who lead the charge under a determined ride from Simon Walker inside the final furlong and was easily clear of a one paced Tom Brady, but as Dakaran (Karmah x Djaxy Des Forges) approached the line it was El Buba under a power packed ride from Anna Wallace who was coming down the centre of the track fast and furious and the Dakaran just held onto victory by a head at the line. Relieved owner/trainer Sarah Saunders said “She’s a nice mare but has been frustrating so far on the track, but I knew she had ability”. El Buba (Mahbuba x Zalmera) ran a storming race in second, he wandered in the straight but he to his credit responded to Wallace’s urgings and was unlucky not to snatch victory at the line. Whilst Tom Brady (Khelure x Island Star) was another five lengths back and seemed to struggle to see out this trip and will be interesting when stepped down in distance at this grade.
9th race – The See You at Fakenham Racecourse on the 27th June OPEN Handicap (TB & AA) Handicap 0-175 over 2 Miles: A great victory here from owner/trainer/jockey Theresa Ashton on Sky Chart here who outstayed the field in dour fashion over this arduous trip, he won in fine style at the line pulling clear of his nearest pursuer by an easy length and half and looks firmly on the upgrade. Just Serenade ran another good race in defeat, she stayed the trip well enough and in spite of Emma Owen’s strong riding she couldn’t get to the winner in time for the line. Whilst Oh Sunny Boy ran his best ARO race to date, travelling well and staying on solidly in the final furlong to land a decent third at the line, he’s on a good mark and is one for the short list next time out in this company.
As you can all imagine I am hugely proud of Benny Boy (Zayin Barakaldo) for winning the maiden and in some style too, what a star, and huge congratulations to Julie Green his owner and trainer for taking on the big guns and winning. Also interesting to note that Benny's dam Barryh is out of a pure Crabbet mare!!
Also well done to Linda Cross and Adam for Wikkara's win, Julie Kelway and my trainer Bev Deutrom for Hidalgo's win (again against the big yards) and the Middleton Stud for Tidarbret's win in the competitive conditions events. Well done to Sarah Saunders as well for Dakaran's victory, and Jenny Peyton for the Anglo victory with her homebred mare Dancing Grace.
Great days racing with some really good competitive racing.
Paul

Its Business as usual at ARO and I am extremely positive about the season ahead and look forward to catching up with everyone on Saturday. There are some great handicaps and both maidens look extremely hot and I am pleased (but slightly nervous) that there is a Zayin bred graduate in each race, and I am looking forward to seeing Barakaldo and Samauring on the track.

Wolverhampton 12th June
1st race – ARO OPEN (TBs & AAs) Handicap over 1 Mile: Yankey has been firmly put in his place twice this season when chasing home Son of Sophie over 12 and 14 furlongs respectively, but has been well clear of the rest of the field; he doesn’t meet anything here that should trouble him and he should open his account now he has been stepped down in trip. Main dangers come from Global Achiever who won with plenty in hand over 7 furlongs here in May and could follow up here for a double (Balerno 3rd and El Figura well beaten). Megabond is also a danger and has won 4 times under ARO rules, the last occasion at Salisbury, he may struggle to stay the mile but cannot be discounted for the in form Mark Cooper yard.
2nd race – The Royal Cavalry of Oman Maiden Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: The most competitive maiden of the year so far and possibly several Derby contenders in the field and many in with a decent chance. Jockey bookings will give the best clue for Gill Duffield’s runners but the siblings Majaales and Al Haitham both look likely to take this event, preference is for Al Haitham who is full brother to Ejaabi (who won his maiden and a Premier Handicap over this trip) and as a five year old should be mature enough to open his account on his debut. The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Hajes looked good when a solid 4th behind Tidarbret at Huntingdon and should go close, whilst No Frills was 4th in France last year and is full sister to global superstar and Group 1 Kahayala Classic winner Fryvolous.
3rd race – The Royal Cavalry of Oman Maiden Stakes (3 & 4 yr olds) over 7 Furlongs: The selection is Jaady who ran a decent race when a length 2nd to stablemate Ashwaaq over 6 furlongs at Huntingdon, and before that was an impressive 2nd to Altobello in the Group 2 Juvenile race on Dubai Day last year, this extra furlong should help him loose his maiden tag. Dangers come from Bill Smith’s impeccably bred Balzan, who is a son of impressive dual winner Balquees, the yard is in form and he should give a good account of himself. Whilst Takaamul has been runner up to both Joybell over this course and distance in May and was also 2nd last time out to stablemate Manaal over 6 furlongs at Huntingdon.
4th race – The Royal Cavalry of Oman 0-80 Handicap Stakes over 6 Furlongs: Ambrose has been knocking on the door for his entire career racing and has run some good races in defeat at this track, he was 2nd over course and distance last term and Bill Smith looks to have found the ideal race from him to get his head in front. Dangers come from the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Wathiq who ran well on his seasonal debut when third to Manaal over this trip at Huntingdon and could go close. Whilst Whisper is tough and consistent and won over twice over 6 and 7 furlongs last term and was far from disgraced when 4th to Genuinely At Risk over a mile here in May; and the lightly raced Hidalgo won his maiden at this track over 7 furlongs and makes his seasonal debut.
5th race – The North Shropshire Anglo Arab Stakes over 1 Mile: Dancing Grace was a phenomenon last year winning 4 of her 5 starts from 9 to 14 furlongs including against thoroughbreds in open races, she was 2nd at this track over 13 furlongs; but can easily account for this field and will take all the beating. Dangers come from La Perruche, who got the biggest cheer of last season when her veteran owner/trainer/jockey won at this track over 9 furlongs, she is tough and should be fighting out the finish. Whilst Risky Jack is a well bred Anglo racehorse and open to more improvement and should land a place in this grade.
6th race – The Athbah Stud (Qualifier) 0-65 Handicap Stakes over 1 Mile 1 Furlong: The selection is the young improving gelding Jaamahir who ran his best race at the end of last season when 2nd to WFA Leopard over 6 furlongs, the latter has franked the form by winning again this season; and has been placed at this track as well as coming from the all weather specialist Delyth Thomas yard. Flashcat looked to have strengthened and improved over the winter when coming a decent 2nd to Dargali over 7 furlongs at Huntingdon, this step up in trip could suit and he could land victory. Hayleys Comet can never be discounted in this grade and won the Jebel Ali Silver final over this trip last season (just beating Wikkara), and was unlucky not to win at Huntingdon over 14 furlongs when going down by a nose to Sabden.
7th race – The Staffordshire Conditions Stakes over 1 Mile: The clear selection is the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Al Charif, who won twice in France last year as a juvenile landing the Prix Nez D’Or and the Group 1 Qatar Breeders Cup Juvenile; he won his only start in the UAE in February when winning the Group 3 Arabian Triple Crown Round 3 and will take all the beating today. Bill Smith runs the impressive Altobello who won the Group 2 Jumeirah Stakes over 7 furlongs last term and was a good 3rd to Nokomys in the UAE Cup in Ireland over 8 furlongs. Whilst Tidarbret is improving with every run, he landed the Breeders Cup last year in fine style from a good field and won on his seasonal debut last month at Huntingdon over 10 furlongs and should be in the shake up.
8th race – The Racing for Change Handicap Stakes 0-45 over 2 Miles: Lile D’Amour is the selection, this classy mare has won numerous times from 6 furlongs to 2 miles and goes particularly well on the all weather, missed last season when having a colt by Eau Royal but ran a race full of promise when 4th to Florys Folly over 9 furlongs at this track and can return to winning ways. Brigitta was a good second that day and looks to be returning to form, trip and track should suit and she should be there at the end. Whilst Tom Brady has been improving with every run, he was fourth over course and distance last term and 2nd in the Jebel Ali Bronze final to El Buba, he needed to run first time out and will be spot on today.
9th race – The ARO Racing OPEN (TB & AA) Handicap 0-175 over 2 Miles: Just Serenade won 3 times with ARO back in 2006 and relishes a true test of stamina, she ran her best race last term when 2nd to stablemate Exclusive Air over 1 mile 4 furlongs and is taken to return to winning ways here. Straffan Cyclone was 3rd to Son Of Sophie over 1 Mile 6 furlongs at Huntingdon and should snatch a place again here, whilst Ditzy Diva was fourth that day and looks progressive and should be in the shake up.
Final selections will appear here on Thursday after declarations.
See you all there,
Paul
