As the subject line says? - I was wondering how many of you travel your horse & take its passport with you?

I know that we are supposed to take the passport when travelling, but I must admit I always leave mine at home

When we were out last week, our pony-club D.C. reminded us to take them but that was the first time in ages.

Would a photocopy of a page of it, be enough if anyone asked to see it?

ALWAYS!!! Sometimes I don't bother to like 5 min locals, but to anything else always!!!

We again keep it all in a file and just take that :)

Always travel with mine, have a little silver hard breif case with all passports in of competing horses which gets loaded along with the equine first aid kit any time any horse goes in the trailer!!

I always keep mine safe in the house not in my lorry and always put it in my bag when getting everything ready for transporting my horses to shows etc.

Horse transporters will not/should not load your horse onto the lorry before they have seen/checked your passport.

It is a legal requirement for the passport to accompany the horse on its journey and not worth the fine to leave it at home

I know, never say never but without going into too much detail on a public forum the lorry is situated securely ;-)
[/right]

Unfortunately, so was mine - it was taken from a commercial HGV storage yard with 24 hour security!!!!

I wouldn't! Just think what would happen if your lorry was stolen!

(Sadly, been there, lost the lorry and *everything* that was on board...)

I do think the time limit imposed for producing the passport (3 hours) is unrealistic and unfair. For heavens sake, we have 24 hours (or is it more ?) to produce our driving licences !

Copied from the Defra website.

Q16. When do I need my passport?
At all times – with the following exceptions:

•stabled or on pasture and the passport can be produced without delay;
•moved temporarily on foot in the vicinity of the holding and the passport can be produced within 3 hours;
•moved on foot between summer and winter grazing;
•unweaned and accompanied by their dam or foster mare;
•participating in a training or test of an equestrian competition which requires them to leave the event venue or
•moved or transported under emergency conditions.

As we only travel for competing we do, but lives in my competition bag, so always with us for competing.

Thought it was a legal requirement.

I'd better remember to start packing in I think! - another thing to add to the list of things to take!
Nut Posted - 29 May 2010 : 9:50:03 PM
Always. I dont have my own transport but have used the same transporters for 4 years now and they inspect my passport every time i load up for the shows as the fine is in the region of £5,000 if stopped and its not with the horses. Cheaper to remember to pack it!
Vera Posted - 29 May 2010 : 9:27:59 PM
You don't need your passport if you are travelling your horse to visit a vet so in an emergency you don't have to waste time getting it but you should have it at all other times. Better safe than sorry.

If I'm going to an event I always have my passport for my horses.

I was randomly blood tested at an event recently and had to have my passport to have it checked.

I believe it is law when traveling horses to have your passport with you.

DC's are now checking ALL passports if you are showing under ECAHO rules - so don'y leave it at home when showing
Suelin Posted - 29 May 2010 : 8:01:01 PM
Yes always! I believe it is a legal requirement.
Kharidian Posted - 29 May 2010 : 7:30:48 PM
I have to say that if I'm travelling to a Pleasure Ride or boxing to hack in another area then no (but I know I should). If travelling to a show then yes.

I too do always travel my horses with their passports... even if its not for competition.
sab2 Posted - 29 May 2010 : 5:42:54 PM
Yes i take my passports when competeing or showing, have to say if doing riding club rallys i leave it at home.
templars Posted - 29 May 2010 : 5:16:54 PM
We always take ours with us - we have them all in a file and just pick the file up and take it along.

They check passports at most BE events and we just got in the habit. Just remember when you're packing things up and pop it inside your hat.
