Posted - 24 May 2010 : 10:32:34 PM Has anybody used Vitamin B12 to stimulate the appetite in their horses.
One of my mares has gone off her hard feed after competing at the GHS although she is eating grass and drinking well.
She really does need her hard feed as she has lost some weight.

Yes I do understand how you must be feeling. I have now put a fly rug on my girl so if people are passing they can not see her condition.
She is grazing happily but is just not really interested in hard feed.
With your mare you could try talking to Roger Hatch from "Trinity Consultants" his number is 0243551766.The website is www.justbespoke.com . He is a wizard when it comes to sorting horses out. He has sent somethings for my girl.

I hope the B12 works as she really does need to put the weight back on.
Each day she is a little better.

Posted - 26 May 2010 : 8:22:43 PM A number of years back, my vet recommended Vit B12 for a young Welsh Sec A pony that had practically stopped eating for no apparent reason. It certainly did the trick and her appetite improved to normal within a short period of time. |

Posted - 26 May 2010 : 3:12:43 PM yes pauline iam afraid people can jump in with both front feet and say that horse has lost alot of weight its being neglected, when it can turnout to be a number of things,(instead of asking the owner)but at least you know the truth!!
we have a mare with weight problems ie she doesnt seem to be able to get to a nice looking show fat!! we start to get her looking nice then next min she thin again i mean thin, ihad blood tests done on her they showed up that she has an infection, the vet said well we know she dosnt have a infection but we will treat her for one she was given a 10 days of anti-botic after that she had a 5 day of b12 injections she started puting the weight on,for that year now i can see she once again losing weight!!
her teeth have been checked same as last time all fine,it driving me mad she cost me alot in feed bills and nothing to show for it my friend said her horse was the same always losing weight she found out her mare had stomach ulcers she had it putdown (which i would never do unless she was in pain)i`d rather let people jump the gun and slag me down for neglected when i know and my vet and horse know we are doing what we can for her and the best we can,
put it this way i even had a visit from the ilph which was welcomed because i`d rather know there are people out there willing to report owners then let a horse suffer, the ilph spoke to my vet and saw my equine dentist carts and huge huge feed bills and was happy to leave us to it , so as long as you have always seek vets help your covering yourself from such reports,
i always hope oneday to see this beautiful mare in full weight!!its not for the lack of trying
i hope your able to sort her out good luck

Posted - 25 May 2010 : 1:33:00 PM Have now spoken to my vet and we are going to put Crystal on Vit B12 injections for 3 days.
He has agreed that it was possibly the trip away to an event that caused the problem.
I have also put her onto Pink Powders and some things from Roger Hatch.
I will look into giving my horses a B12 at the beginning and end of the winter.
To look at Crystal at the moment people would say I have neglected her,BUT no way have I or would I ever do that to any horse of mine.

May also talk to my vet see what he says.
I thing the old groom use to give the hunters B12 at the start of the season so maybe I will go down that line too.

Posted - 24 May 2010 : 11:15:49 PM I have B12 injections every 10 to 12 weeks and although I can't say I've noticed an increased appetite I do notice that within a week I feel a whole lot better - more energised!
Sorry a bit random but thought I'd just add |
