Does anyone else have a stallion with good housekeeping habits?

Since we moved to our new house my boy has been able to go out into his paddock whenever he wants. I keep the paddock gate open and he wanders in and out of the yard to suit himself. The funny thing is, whenever he needs to poo he comes back into the yard and either 'goes' in his stable or he poops right beside the muckheap! I have never known him do this before and I'm not complaining as I don't have the job of poo picking the paddock which is fab . I'm just wondering if I can train him to fill haynets and carry water buckets now .

My old girl Fayre has always pooed in one place. She walks all the way across the field to a muck pile to poo on it. Unfortunately she hasnt trained her protege's as well.

Red is a grandson of Shah Shadow and he likes to stick poos to the wall - didn't realise it was a family trait; thought it was just him. We always say he's done an Iced Gem. (Am I showing my age again?)

My gelding is a tidy toilet chap and will aim for the barrow when I poo pick - but the girls............. he's tried to teach them by herding them to the toilet spot but when he's not looking they do their own thing!

I don't think it is necessarily down to what sex they are - my two cleanest have been a mare and a gelding, The two muckiest were both geldings (and boy were they mucky! ).

The old boy Shah Shadow was always very clean - he would poo over the fence so as to avoid messing up his field/yard etc. And over the stable door too if he was cross about something! Lots of his babies are the same, even the fillies. And most will stick it to the walls in an attempt to keep their beds neat!!

Tiger was gelded at 6 and luckily that trate stayed!!!!

he is SO clean!!! And he always goes on the muck heap or in one corner of the field!!! and in his stable he goes in one pile too!!!

Mares are horrible and messy

When Arabi was a stallion all his poos where in one pile in the stable and he only went in one spot in the field, now he is a gelding he is still very clean and has about 3 different places in the field, my mare was disgusting would go anywhere definitely agree boys tend to be cleaner.

I've always been really lucky with my mares and stallions, they've always had their corners to poo in and the same place for wee. Even out in the fields they had little corners, poo picking was a doddle! The geldings I've had have always seemed to spread it around, apart from one who was gelded very late, and still retained all his stallion toilet habits. I think mares tend to come in two categories - clean or really filthy.

Loving the idea of a horse that'll walk up the plank onto the poo heap to poo!!

Some stallions (not all!) are great at pooing in the same place. Ours does and it saves SO much time!

The lovely Samad (RIP) used to always poo in the same corner of his stable. The straw was spread for his bed but the very corner left bare and he just pooed there.

I am on my second entire, father and son and both were/are toilet creature unlike the other son and half brother to my colt who goes anywhere. Interestingly enough the colts mother is also a toilet tidy horse.

Khatreena poos and wees at will anywhere in the stable, and usually chooses to lie in it also! Mucky mare ...but I love her! x

Morris is a very tidy boy. In the field he always lines his bottom up so his poo is in a pile. This is handy in the stable too as he is in a very large stable for his size (14x14) I leave a few balls of poo to the side of the stable off his bed and hey presto nice neat pile in the morning that I just shovel up!

Dennis on the other hand isn't called poo monster for nothing... but he is a gelding.

My 2 girls only poo in one little area outside their stable & never where they graze which is very handy .
In the winter when its wet & muddy Jazzi only poo`s on the 12X12 flagstone area outside her stable door as she doesn`t want to get her feet wet & because im in a rush to do them before work there is the biggest pile of poo ever by the afternoon
Their doors are left open 24/7 but if its really windy & i have to shut her in during the night she rushes out in the morning to have a pee ...they both pee when asked to aswell either in the field or in a bucket !

Both my boys are clean in fact my mini stallion runs up the wood to the muckheap and poos bless him and the big boy poos against the wall.My mares im afraid are filthy poo anywhere then trample it in , lets give a round of applause for the boys

My old TB stallion was a pig to be honest... but yes normally stallions are cleaner then the mares and geldings... Champ poos along the back wall of his stable, so easy to muck out... never steps in it, so always just a neat line... got a toilet in the field, but out here my mare uses the same place (she is actually quite clean too, has 2 poo places in her stable).

think its a bit funny how us horsey girls can get happy about stuff like that
BeckyPhillips Posted - 24 May 2010 : 8:39:33 PM
i wish Bonkers was like that
he's the most discusting horse :L he decided he wanted to sit on a water drinker in the stable the night before a show, resulting in going up the next morning and he was in the back corner looking sorry for himself in his flooded stable haha.

Kharidian Posted - 24 May 2010 : 8:31:23 PM
I think most stallions are the cleanest, and in my experience many geldings are cleaner than mares.

My boy is so clean and always goes in the same place for wees and poo's in the field and in the stable wish I could say the same for my mucky mares bls]
rosie Posted - 24 May 2010 : 7:49:53 PM
when we had our stallion he would pee to command.
He never had a pee in his stable but would wait until I took him outside & whistled!
Also, all his poos were in one place.
When we sold him I told his new owner his quirks & he would pee on command for her as well!!
So easy to muck out.
What a shame my grey mare isn't cleaner!
