Hello everyone! This is the first time I have started my very own topic as I am fairly new to AL but I am having an emotional day and was hoping for a bit of moral support My poor little chap Saahm has had a slightly swollen sheath for a while now. I had put it down to his age (20) and being stabled much more over the horrible winter we had. He is now out 24/7 and the swelling has not gone down much. I gave him his first bath of the summer on Saturday and noticed a fairly small veiny looking lump on one side and have noticed that he seems to be leaving his willy out a lot more than usual. I am now paranoid there is something more worrying going on and feel so guilty that I haven't done something sooner! He has owned me for 10 years and has been fairly well apart from a touch of laminitis a few years ago and some creaky joints. The vet is coming out at 4pm today so some positive thoughts would be massively appreciated

Thats great news. My friends old boy had a swollen sheath and similar treatment was diagnosed so I hope that he will soon be back to his normal self soon.

Aw thanks everyone! You are all so lovely! Good news! The vet found no lumps or growths which was my biggest concern He was a little bit dirty but right up in the crinkly bit which is virtually impossible to clean without a sedative but the vet had the lovely job of doing it The vet thought he was probably having his willy out a bit more in the warm weather because it felt a bit more uncomfortable with the dirty bit. He thinks the swelling, puffiness and veiny bit is probably old age related with muscle loss in that area, fatty deposits and poorer circulation. He has a week of bute and I have to call the vet on Friday to give him an update. I am so relieved! So a big thank you to you all

Fingers crossed for him. I hope it turns out to be 'just one of those things' horses get to prematurely age us.

Hi Louise

Sorry to hear Sammy has a problem - will be keeping my fingers crossed for both of you that it is nothing more serious than Roseanne has described...

Hi there, I wonder if this is 'buttercup' disease which my boy gets every early summer if he doesn't have fly spray applied without fail.

When it first happened we were at a stud where there were LOADS of buttercups but no one there had ever heard of it.

It was only when I had to abandon going to a show because poor Lance had a very swollen sheath and we called the senior vet that it was diagnosed. He took one look and told us what it was.

Apparently there are tiny charcoal coloured flies on almost every buttercup flower and these (like midges) have to have a blood meal before reproducing. So they fly to easy targets, like the exposed skin around a horse's sheath.

Some horses just are a bit allergic to the build up of anti-coagulant the flies inject to suck the blood out.

Keeping your boy in during the day, or using a decent fly repellent, should stop this. If it is that, nexe year you should keep an eye on when the buttercups are approaching and start the fly repellent in time.

Hope that helps...
