Abnormal elbow joint, I took Arabi to the vet yesterday after many months of intermittent lameness which we thought was caused by a flare and imbalance on his off side fore, well the foot was looking good vet was pleased but he still was unlevel on a circle and worse on the left rein.
Well the foot was nerve blocked yesterday and he was still lame, anyway my vet then said he thinks its much higher if not in the foot so started pulling the shoulder about and he was not happy at being pulled around where as he was fine when he did the same on the near side.
So the x rays indicate a rough edge on the joint in his elbow, this is quite rare so he has sent them to a specialist at Royal Vet College to see if there is anything they can do surgically, he is only 5 so I have to try even though the thought of surgery terrifies me as its a risk I really didn't want to face.
Arabi is the most easiest kindest horse he stood like an angel yesterday while they stuck needles in his legs, all the girls at the vets know him well and say how good he is they said he is such a good patient, he has been at the vets allot recently as he had a really bad guttural pouch infection last year .
I just hope there is something they can do even if his only sound enough to hack I cant face the fact he may be a field ornament I will be gutted. any kind words or advice would be greatly appreciated as I am feeling very sad at the moment.

Dont be sad Pinkyboots. He is young and could come right again with time, particularly as it is only when he is circling.

My old boy had both high and low ringbone at 5 and I was told he needed to be put to sleep. The bones all fused up at 9 and he was ridden regularly until he was 15 and then had a nice long retirement until he was 29.

I hope that there is either some surgical procedure that can help him, or that the pain from the rough edges will settle down with time/work.

Keep us updated. All the best.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate your kindness Sabine I will come and see you soon and have a catch up, and Sugar please come down anytime.I felt a bit better over the weekend after I had thought about it I just have to hope they can do something.
To explain things a bit better the vet thinks his joint has just developed this way when he was growing so nothing anyone could have done, and it was nothing to do with his antics in the field as he hurt the opposite shoulder and that is fine now.
I was told by my vet to carry on riding but to only hack out the lameness is only visible on a circle and is very slight, I took him out yesterday and he was full of the joys of Spring bless him bouncing along quite happy, I will keep you all updated and let you know as soon as I hear anything.

So sorry for all of you Come and see us if you can. Thinking of you, hope it works out well for poor Arabi and yourselves, did not realise that you had a problem. Do you think it is at all related to when he had his fall in the field

How worrying for you....although it's good that your vet is getting advice from the specialists.
I really hope they come back with a positive response.

Keeping everything crossed for you.
