..am i the only one who still believes that Arabs should have short cannon bones??? i notice that so many young stock these days have long elegant legs that seem to stretch on forever! What are your thoughts?? |

I thought ALL horses should have short cannon bones, but what do I know? |

As usual I strongly agree with you all 
Long cannons are, as Minhe says a way to make a basically 14.3 horse measure at 15.1, it is a weakness, unattractive and not conduicive to good movement, give me the sound compact 14.3 to ride any day!
There are, of course, some lovely big Arabs that are in perfect proportion.
I was at a big stud client of mine a few years ago, expressing disdain for the extremely long weedy cannons on a filly, the owner told me with a wry smile that a few weeks previously a well known and successful in hand show producer had commented on the filly's 'LOVELY LONG CANNONS'  .

Sadly, long cannons are the EASY way to get increased height, so folk who want tall Arabs (?why? 15h is plenty high to fall from.. .) often end up breeding for long cannons rather than overall height....hence the sausage on a stick look.

Long forearm - short cannons - free at the eldow
All musts in our book! Youngsters and growth spurts can make things look a little odd at times
Proper horse sized feet and knees are also essential - too many pony limbs on some hacks these days IMO  |

There does seem to be a trend to produce arabs that are 'leggy' I feel they can be too leggy and make the overall balance of the animal wrong.
Also those that are so leggy when ridden may have no depth of girth and the riders legs can be seen far below the girth line.
I have bred some tall ones but they are very deep bodied and the legs although quite long in some, are longer above the knee. The cannon is still short and strong and the whole balance of the animal is correct.
The leggy ones may not be back at the knee at the stand up but on moving if you get a clip of them from the side a different story is told, the whole front leg can bow backwards. I have seen this many times, a huge weakness.
Saying all this, some youngstock do grow in strange stages and we had one that was just legs! same as Pats mine grew on and developed much later into a fine animal with shorter cannons than the upper part of the leg, also with a wonderful depth of girth. Not what they had as a yearling!! The bone gets bigger in some too.

Hi Suyen,
My 'Boneeta' (rescue) seemed to have canons equal length to the top when she first arrived, but now the top has grown, and the canon remained unchanged, if you understand me. I think she has quite decent legs now.
She is 15.2 and can certainly move too.
Who would think after her start, what a big girl she has made.
Just my experience of long canons on youngster. |

Elegant legs yes!!.......but must have good round hooves with heels not too low, pasterns not overlong, short cannons with good flat bone, well formed knees and long muscular forearms not tied in at the elbow, Hind legs, hocks broad and well let down with broad, well formed stifle and gaskin. That is our aim for foals we breed.
