Posted - 21 Apr 2010 : 7:06:23 PM I am wondering if it is just me that is fed up with having to trawl through 2-3 pages of topics on the 'Discussion' forum that are not really classed as 'serious horse talk' but are sometimes also not suitable for the 'Ask the panel' or 'Tea-time Chat'?
I thought that maybe Paula/Rui could provide a 'Photos' forum for people to post photos of their horses, cats, dogs, kids etc having fun? (Showing photos already have a place in 'Showing') and perhaps a 'Help wanted' forum for people needing urgent help with anything? (Feed & horse health related questions already have a place in 'Ask the Panel')
Or maybe we could ask for a new forum for what I would call the real serious discussions like the AHS problems, cruelty, Anglo/Part bred Stud Book problems, etc...?
Perhaps the answer is to put up a list so that people can see what topics should be posted where?
Anyone got any thoughts/ideas that I can perhaps go to Paula/Rui with?

Posted - 27 Apr 2010 : 1:30:21 PM Stop it Lynda Perhaps you should have gone to the 'Discussion' forum (for serious horse talk) and asked advice on what colours before you bought them
Goldenmane, please don't be wary, nobody is going to get angry because something is not where it really should be, I am asking that we all remind ourselves of what each forum is for BEFORE we post a topic, most of it really is common sense
Here are some fictional examples that might help -
Jo Bloggs wants advice on what to buy/use for inhand showing or ridden, or what show sheen is best, basically anything to do with showing prep through to participating in a class etc.... then the post should be put in the Showing forum.
Jo Bloggs wants to know how much or what to feed their horse, what grass seed to use, what hay/straw is best/worst, how best to travel a horse, whats the best trailer, what rugs are best (New forum needed 'Ask Vera' ) and especially for Lynda, what colour bucket should they buy then the post should be put in the Ask the Panel forum.
Jo Bloggs has won at a show, has photos and wants to celebrate with everyone and thank helpers, then the post should go on the Congratulations/Thank You forum.
I personally think that some people post everything in the Discussion forum, irrelevant of what the topic is about, just because that is where they think they will get the most views/responses from
Having been a member on here since 2003 this site has very much grown well done Paula (and Rui) and from that I would say that perhaps there is now a need for a photo forum, and as already suggested, a forum for yard chit chat, for all those that want to talk about everyday horsey stuff that is not serious or of a life/death nature

There is no reason for that. All that's asked is that you have a look at AL's structure and decide the best location. No one gets angry because a post is not located at the best place, nothing will change about that.
AL caters to different users with different interests and some organization is in place just to make it easier for people to look at the best place to find posts that meet their interests. It's not a life or death decision. So, please, don't be wary . |

Posted - 26 Apr 2010 : 5:01:38 PM I will take Mandy's cue and ask for everyone's cooperation on proper post placement. We don't want to look as forceful enforcers of anything, our belief is that the best way to approach this is through self discipline, but you know we do move some of the most clearly out of place topics.
We do need to strike a balance between the number of forums we have and forum usability. Everything would be easier with frequent use of active topics, as it is a great place to find out what changed since your last visit (and marking everything read before you leave is the best way to ensure you get all new contents when you get back). Of course, the usual browsing through forums is always needed to get a better perspective of the stuff in a specific forum, but active topics has an advantage - every post gets seen, regardless of the place where it is posted.
Thank you Mandy for bringing this issue up and thank you all for the feedback provided. |

Posted - 26 Apr 2010 : 2:05:36 PM OK then, perhaps one option would be to educate people to post their topics in the correct places?
As in, there is a showing forum for questions/help on showing, a panel forum for help/advice on things like feeding/handling etc...
From what I have read some are saying that they happen to like everything in one place? If thats the case and people are not going to use the forums of showing, ask the panel, where are they know, etc... that sounds like you are saying that Paula is just a well to get rid of all other forums and dump everything in one place?
Personally I like the different areas, have done for years but for the past few months it is getting worse and I am very bored with having to page through all the stuff that has been posted in the wrong place.
Perhaps we could all try to keep the forums for topics that they were intended.....Especially the Discussion forum which should be for SERIOUS horsetalk not, for example, 'what colour feed bucket should I buy' or 'has your grass started growing yet' type questions.....
The photo forum I think would be a great addition for those who like to show us their horses, dogs, cats, kids, OH's etc....
Before anyone says....I have tried the 'active topics' but you still have to trawl through all the stuff that shouldn't really be on there.... |

Posted - 23 Apr 2010 : 11:05:20 AM Quite happy with the way it is too, but I would like to see a PRIVATE area so that only members can read when signed in.
That way, if any rescue threads come up Jo Public can't read what is being organised etc etc
Just a thought...... |

Posted - 22 Apr 2010 : 7:54:48 PM Don't panic I promise I am not going to ask for AL to be changed, I too like it as it is but just hate having to trawl through all the general 'chit chat' that isn't serious horse talk on the discussion forum and wondered if anyone else felt the same
Perhaps best idea might be for all of us to try and put the right topic in the right place?
I still think that a photo forum and yard chit chat forum would be great though |

Posted - 22 Apr 2010 : 09:46:23 AM I see where you're coming from, but one of the reasons I love AL (apart from the obvious) is the fact that almost everything is in one place - same with the BD forum actually.... hardly ever look on anything else now as I haven't got the time or the inclination to trawl through pages and pages |

Posted - 21 Apr 2010 : 10:05:14 PM I've never searched Active Topics either!! I didn't actually realise it exsisted!
I like AL as it is but understand what you are saying Angel. The problem though is that it then gets too big and there would end up too many pages to look through. I'm a member of another forum site (nothing to do with arabs!) and they have a rediculous amount of headings and pages. Half the time I only look at the General Topics, Horses for Sale and the section on Feeding. |

Posted - 21 Apr 2010 : 9:16:42 PM Been on here all these years and never searched like that..... Will give it a go but I would have thought it will still show up active topics on the 'Discussion' forum that are really just general chit chat?
Saying that I do like the idea of a 'Yard Chat' forum, good idea Angelarab
