I'm having a bit of a wibble as I fell off yesterday. Last week on another forum I read a horror story about a woman getting dragged to death because her foot got caught in the stirrup when she came off.

If I'm not careful, I'll terrorise myself with images of the same happening to me.

I have open stirrup bars and caged endurance stirrups, but somehow, I'm feeling that this isn't enough.

I seem to remember flailing my legs madly (while going down bum first) trying to make sure I'd kicked my feet out - I'm sure it looked very funny.......

Anyone know of an incident where someone got their foot caught in a caged stirrup (flex ride type?) Or are the Barnes buckles all their cracked up to be?

Lol, thanks guys, for the reassurance, and for your sympathy Emma! I can now walk up stairs, and put my car into 5th gear, so definitely on the mend!

It happened kind of slow motion, as I was trying to stay on, but then realised 'no chance'!

I'll stop being such a 'what-if' worrier now....

cant say ive ever heard of it with caged stirrups, i got dragged for over 200 yards by my left leg caught in a normal stirrupwhich is why im disabled now, so i know where your coming from! im would have thought so long as they are plenty wide enough for your boots they should be fine......and much more comfy too lol at the vision of you flailing your legs madly as you fall i would of thought that takes some real skill! how on earth do you have time to think mid fall? very impressive......i just hit the ground and hurt! no time for thinking

hope your not too sore?

Hi all

I also got caged stirrups when I bought my Torsion saddle as they do not have the same leather fixing as normal saddles, but I'm also very happy with them at my age they feel safer.....not that I'm getting any use at the moment nursing a broken ankle!!

I also use the cage stirrups and wouldn't use anything else. I don't see how your foot could be caught in those unless you've somehow tied laces through them! I used to work with someone who accidentally did that with a "normal" stirrup whilst riding a yearling TB on the road. He had no idea until we got back to the yard and he was about to dismount. I've never seen anyone so white and shaky till then!

Hi Kelly,

I wont use anything else now for hacking, the endurance caged stirrups are great, not only are they safe but so comfortable and good for absorbing concussion.

I'm sure I've heard about someone where they were dragged with one of those though....

I wonder if I can fit a cage to a one-sided stirrup, attached to the leather by a Barnes Buckle?

Never heard of anyone being dragged whilst using a caged stirrup, but if you're really worried then why not use child style safety stirrups with the rubber band sides? Also make sure your stirrups are big enough for your feet so they come out easily should you fall off.
