Ok so he's not an Arab! The subject is a dales x. Our problem is that his mane lies on both sides! It needs pulling now as it's nearly down to his shoulder but I would like for it all to lie on one side really.I've tried plaiting it over but this only worked for a few days before it went back to both sides! I would love any suggestions on how to tame it! Also is there Anything any one would suggest I could put on his tail to keep the shavings out or at least make them easier to brush out? Thankyou in advance!!  |

Wash his mane and pull down hard with a plastic curry so that it is all laying tight to his neck as required, especially at the roots. Have
ready some heavy material large enough to cover the neck. Hessian sacking (the best for this but almost impossible to get now)a big bath towel or a double piece of blanket. Wrap the neck in your material of choice.
Pull tight enough to fit the shape and hold together with pegs. It's best to leave the horse tied up until the mane is dry. Every now and then check the hair is laying straight and roll(pull)the neck covering round the neck in the direction of the mane hair. Do this about every 4-5 days. If you don't want to wash just hot wet thoroughly. For every day living hot wet the mane well and plait for about 3 turns(each plait)pulling tightly into where the mane hair meets the body hair. Fasten with an elastic band. Don't plait long hair down the whole length, if the hair gets caught on anything you'll be minus a chunk of mane. |

Being a native, should he have his mane pulled?
When you plait it do you wet it first? We used to plait using egg whites to keep the plaits neat and stick down stray hairs. It also had the effect of glueing the mane where you wanted it. However you have your work cut out with lots of mane. There are probably other, better products available now to do the egg white thing. Hairspray might help as well.
Sorry just noted he is a dales X. Then yes he can have his mane pulled. You will find the taming the mane easier with less of it. Can I borrow some of it? Lol, I have the opposite problem with a TB who has been hogged for polo. Need it to grow a bit. |
