My boy had about 8 inches of his mane shaved out when I got him 2 years ago.

I started growing it out last september and the previously shaved part is now about 8-10 inches long.

My problem is he looks "moth-eaten" to say the least as the 1st 8 inches of his mane from the poll are half the length of the rest of the mane, the the bottom near his withers has been rubbed a bit so that bit is a bit shorter, though not as noticeable as its where it usually thins out a but length wise.

It looks liked I've started pulling it and got bored!!

so what to do... should I leave it of pull the mane so it blends from the top down???

suggestions please

I would arab plait it fairly loose, because of the roots, and keep it in, just re do once a week.

Mmm... It was total last resort to hog it, it was such a complete mess... I had tried everything to save it and hated doing it, but it's getting there now.

Anyway.. I would say if you are going to cut it, use your scissor blades in the same direction as the hair growth and cut up into it rather than across the ends (hope you understand) ... This gives far more natural look and not blunt ends.

Good luck with it, and the shows xx

I'd do it with the scissors or a clipper blade to be honest, if you pull you'll get regrowth. But that should work - a natural arc is very flattering.
Marmite, love it!

yep

I was hoping it'd have grown out reasonably well, and the judges would forgive the mane he'll only do ridden at county level as hes a bit marmite for in hand ( 16hh and not even 5 yet!)

would it look a total arse if it graduated from the top?? 8 inches down to about 12 inches so I'd have to pull the middle bit some what?

I have the same dilemma where Ishara's mane was eaten by her field mate last year, it's grown well but looks awful as all different thickness and length. I was going to wait for the shorter bits to grow a bit more and then trim the longer bits to match which I know will look rubbish at first but hopefully it will grow down okay! Are you planning to show him this year?
Mrs Vlacq Posted - 18 Apr 2010 : 9:07:51 PM
You could trim the middle to blend to a natural shape and unify it. As long as you take your time and are careful about it it will look natural. Do it in stages, take a photo of each attempt and look at the photo after a day or so to decide if you need to do any more
It's so frustrating when they have gaps

CRIKEY!!

I dont think I could bring myself to hog it

the top is 8-10 inches now but the middle is about 18 inches ...

should I just graduate the length from the top perhaps??

I do show him and dressage him

I did laugh at that! Thanks

Have got any pics? That might help to advise what would look best.

Well..(and I'll probably get flack for this) ... This happened to one of mine last year... He rubbed the bottom part off so badly that really only the bridle path part was still there... His mane was completely in reverse, so I hogged it all off!!

but....this year, it has all started to grow back beautifully. He now has a midge rug too which hopefully will help loads and it's looking lovely thick and healthy.

Fortunately he isn't being shown so I dnt know what I would have done otherwise.
