Magic got runny eyes with the flies last summer and I was thinking of putting a fly mask on her. Do horses take to them without any problems? I have visions of her tearing round the field in "I can't see!" mode. |

It depends very much on the individual - I've arrived more than once to find a lop-sided mask and a very patient horse waiting for Mum to sort it out...

My filly is fine with hers but my vet did tell me a horrible story about a rather hysterical youngster who got a fly mask half on half off and went berserk. The vet sent for a ranger from the local safari park who shot the horse with a tranquiliser dart!!! Sorry didn't mean to alarm anyone but it pays to be careful if excitable temperament is involved. Sometimes better a few flies.........? |

My two wear them as one has one eye and the other gets very bad eye infections otherwise! Don't know if Anyone else finds this but they rub excessively when I take them off ? I think they are cashel flymasks is there anything that would stop them rubbing? Especially as the one eyed pone rubs his face in his haynet I panic he's going to damage is only eye |

I have put mine on from them being young and they
are usually fine. Odd occasions i have found them
round the field but never had problems with them.
I would rather keep the flies away from there eyes
as we all know what they get on  |

I have a Roma one too... but I got a medium and it sits on her eyelashes... so should anyone want one of those I've got a spare navy and black... just PM me your address and I'll post it. |

Hmmmm. Think I will go for the Cashel Crusader and see how she goes. They seem to be a popular choice and look to give good eye clearance. |

Definately YAY!!!
We also use the Cashel ones in Arab size - they wash very well and last for a good few years!
Shesky hated his at first and tried rubbing it off and then got Pasha to pull it off for him But he soon discovered the benefits and happily wore it all summer |

I have always used fly mask's my old horse didn't like the sound of velcro being undone, so she was fine putting it on but it took a while for her to get used to me taking it of, I used to give her a polo or cough when I pulled the velcro so it took her mind off the noise. |

I always use them on Ry; because he is often "difficult" with new things, I thought he'd be "difficult" with fly masks - no problem at all. I think the Cashel ones are best. i get a new one every year, cos they tend to lose shape after a year or so. I always think horses with fly masks look like they are preparing to go off and rob a bank! |

Yay - always use them to protect from sunlight and flies. Without their masks the girls eyes weep. I think they could also help prevent periocular sarcoids. Cashel are great and we use one with a 'nose' on pink skinned horses to prevent sunburn. |

We bought some from the SI helpline and they've been great, even survived chewing. I have used that stretchy Roma one Angel - but go upa size, the cob was tiny and pressed on long eyelashes.
I've only had 1 horse react badly, but it was a cream/white coloured mask which I think was too much to figure out.
I have an oldie with wet eyes and no forelock. I tend to just use a fly fringe on her, or plenty of Pure Gold (again from the SI people). |

I use the Cashel ones - dearer, but they come in an Arab size which fits perfectly! I have also found the Aerborn ones to fit and last well - medium size.
I tried the Shire ones last year but even the Pony size was ginormous on my A-rab.
I am a bit doubtful about the soft mesh ones staying clear of the horse's face - the Aerborn/Cashel ones are fairly stiff and keep their shape well.
I need to get mine mended - this year looks as if it will be straight from rugs into fly sheets!

Kwiryna uses the ones from Rambo as she gets severe eye infection (because of the flies) without.. I have cut off the ears though, as she seamed to drop them all the time when the ears are on. |

I have fly masks for all 3 of mine. I have the Equilibrium field relief max, full faces and noses.

Great for greys with pink noses....
As long as you try it on in a safe area and perhaps lead her around in it for a bit, I don't see it being a problem.
I wouldn't be without mine. My 3 have no objections to me putting them on...
